(p. 1) a a.1. The first letter of the Telugu alphabet as of many others. Hence the phrase అ ఆలు formed like the word 'alphabet' from the first two letters in the series, means the whole of the Tel. alphabet. See ఓనమాలు and వర్ణమాల. అకారము is the letter or sound of a, the term కారము being added to each letter in naming it. అకారాదిగా beginning with the letter అ seriatim, i.e., in alphabetical order. The letter అ has the same shape as the Eng. 'A' reversed. but is quite rounded off, and represents like its Semitic prototype 'the horns of an ox' (Taylor.) The stroke / called తలకట్టు tala-kaṭṭu and placed over many consonants is popularly, though by mistake as pointed out by Burnell, taken to be the secondary form of అ. The letter అ has the same sound as the Eng. a in 'around.' 'delta','Victoria. ' It is the 'low-back-wide vowel formed by the jaws, pharynx and lips wide open' and is supposed to be inherent in consonants -- e. g., in బ b, ల l, జ j.

(p. 3) aṅkili ankili. [Tel.] n. An obstacle; impediment. Grief, sorrow. 'శోకోపశమనంబులైన వచనంబులు చెప్పి యంకి లిదేర్చి.' భార. శాంతి. i. 288.

(p. 5) aṅgamu angamu. [Skt.] n. The body, a limb, member, part, division or branch. అంగవంచకము = ఉపాయము, సహాయము, దేశకాలవిభజనము, ఆపదకు ప్రతిక్రియ, కార్యసిద్ధి. అద్భుతాంగులు beings having wondrous forms. అష్టాంగములు = the eight forms or stages of meditation, i. e, యమము, నియమము, ప్రాణాయామము, ప్రత్యాహారము, ధ్యానము, ధారణ, మననము, సమాధి. చతురంగములు the four divisions of an army, i. e., రథములు, ఏనుగులు, గుర్రములు, బంటులు. పంచాంగము the Indian calendar giving particulars of each day, as తిథి, వారము, నక్షత్రము, యోగము, కరణము. రాజ్యాంగములు the various departments of Government. షడంగములు or వేదాంగములు the six sciences dependent on the Vedas. i. e., శిక్ష, కల్పము, వ్యాకరణము, నిరుక్తము, జ్యోతిషము, ఛందస్సు. సప్తాంగములు = the seven constituents of a Government. స్వామి, అమాత్యుడు, సుహృత్తు, కోశము, రాష్ట్రము, దుర్గము, బలము. సాష్టాంగ ప్రణామము prostrate homage, touching the ground with eight members of the body, i. e., eyes or chest and forehead, hands, knees and feet.

(p. 4) aṅgavradakṣiṇamu anga-pradakshiṇamu. [Skt.] n. Rolling the body like a log to the right for a distance or round a temple, as a religious vow or penance. ప్రార్థన చేసికొనువాడు గుడి మొదలగువాటికి ప్రదక్షిణముగా దొరలుట.

(p. 6) añce anche. [Tel. & Kan.] n. The post, a relay of horses or palankeen bearers. తపాలు, టపా. A row of things. అంచెల చెలందు at every station, మను. iv. 87. అంచెలుకట్టు v. n. To be at one's post: to wait as post runners one after another. 'అంచెలుకట్టు కాలితొడుసైచన నీవుగదమ్మ.' మను. v. 72. See also అంచే.

(p. 9) aṇḍa anḍa [Tel.] n. Nearness; assistance, protection, patronage. ఆసరా, ఆశ్రయము. అండగోడ a buttress, a sloping wall, built to support another. ఆయన అండ చేరి ఉన్నాను I am under his protection. ఆయనను అండచేసికొనియున్నాను I look upon him as my supporter, I hold to him.

(p. 10) antaratāmara antara-tāmara. [Tel.] n. A water plant, without any root to the ground, swimming upon the surface of the lakes, &c. Pistia stratiotes. Menyanthes cristata (Roxb). ఆకాశతామర. అంతరతామర also means the itch. గజ్జి.

(p. 11) antarāyamu anta-rāyamu. [Skt.] n. Obstacle, impediment. విఘ్నము.

(p. 12) antalapontalavāḍu antalapontalavāḍu. [Tel.] n. A distant relation పరంపరాసం బంధి, దగ్గిరిచుట్టాలుకానివారు.

(p. 12) antasthalu antasthalu. [Skt.] n. A name given in grammar to the four consonants y,r,l,v,య, ర, ల, వ, which are considered by the Sanskrit Grammarians to be semi-vowels, and 'to be intermediate between vowels and consonants, or because they stand between the consonants and the sibilants in the alphabet.' Wms. అంతస్థమద్గరము in anat. the malleus of the ear.

(p. 14) andipondinavāru andipondinavāru. [Tel.] n. plu. Distant relations. దూరపుచుట్టాలు.

(p. 14) andu andu. [Tel.] v. a. To reach, get at. To obtain or gain. To suffer or meet with (joy, grief, death, &c.) చెయ్యి చాచి పుచ్చుకొను, పొందు. అరుదందు feel surprise.భయమందు to be afraid. జన్మమందు to be born. వియ్యమందు to intermarry. అందిచూచు to peep, to look over a wall, &c. దుఃఖమందు to be sorry. కృతి అందినవాడు he to whom it is dedicated కంపమందు to be afraid. మిన్నందిన sky-high, reaching to the clouds. అందిపొందినవారు distant kinsfolk. అందించు [causal of అందు to reach.] v. t. To give, hand over, to enable to get.

(p. 18) aṃsamu amsamu. [Skt.] n. A shoulder, భుజశిరస్సు. అంసకూటము, a bull's hump. అంసపాదికట్టె a small forked prop which supports the woodwork on which a roof is laid. A small forked stake used at intervals to relieve the shoulders of those who bear a car, &c., in procession. అంసఫలకము, the upper part of the spine.

(p. 18) akaru or అకరువు akaru. [Tel.] n. The stamens of a lotus. తామరదుద్దులోనగువాని చుట్టునుండునది; కింజల్కము. 'ఆకాశమండలంబును నల్లగలువకు నకరువాద్యుండులోలార్కమూర్తి.' కాశీ. i.

(p. 20) akkara akkara. [Tel.] n. Necessity, occasion, want, need, desire, అగత్యము. అక్కరతీర్చు to relieve from want. అది నాకక్కరలేదు I do not want it. దీనితో నీకేమి అక్కర what have you to do with this? నీవక్కడికి రావలసిన అక్కరయేమి what business had you to come there? అక్కరకొద్దీ మాట్లాడుట to speak as necessity demands. అది అక్కరకురాదు it will be of no use. వాడికి ఆ పని అక్కరపట్టలేదు he does not care for it. అక్కరకాడు one who is in need. అక్కరగలవాడు; అక్కరగండడు one who has an interest in an affair. శ్రద్ధగలవాడు; అక్కరపడు, అక్కరగొను to feel an interest in a thing. అక్కరకలిగియుండు, అక్కరపాటు a state of necessity. అక్కరపడుట.
