(p. 70) abhimānamu abhi-mānamu. [Skt.] n. Pride, self-esteem, haughtiness Patronage, protection. Affection, regard, care, love, favour. గర్వము, సంరక్షణ, విశ్వాసము, దేశాభిమానము love of one's own country, patriotism. వాడు దేహాభిమానము కలవాడు he pays great attention to his own ease. he is luxurious. అభిమానపుత్రుడు one who passes for one's son, or is looked upon as a son, or, supposed to be his child. అభిమానపుత్రత్వము an understood or attribute sonship. తమ అభిమానము కావలసినది I beg your patronage. నా యందు నిండా అభిమానముగా జరిగించినాడు he has treated me honourably. ఒకని మీద అభిమానము ఉంచు to be partial to a person. అభిమానము లేనివాడు one without affection; unkind అభిమాని n. He who loves. విశ్వాసము గలవాడు. మతాభిమాని a bigot. కులాభిమాని one who stands up for his caste. దేశాభిమాని the advocate for his country, he who loves his country, a patriot. అభిమానించు v. a. To honor, favour, protect, patronise, regard with kindness. గొప్ప చేయు, గౌరవించు.

(p. 105) ā The broad vowel A, as in arm, father. [The Secondary form of this letter is -- which is a modified form of the upright stroke | used to denote the long sound of a in Sanskrit. [The ingenuity of the inventors of the Indian Alphabets is shown by the way in which they formed the long vowels out of the short ones by giving a slightly different turn to their forms. See Taylor.] 2. The demonstrative sign, as ఆ పని that act, ఆ కథలు those stories, ఆ వెనుక after that, ఆ తెల్లవారి next morning. ఆ ఆ (or ఆయా) యిండ్లలో in the various houses. 3. As a contraction ఆ stands for ఆశ్వాసము chapter; also for a certain verse ఆటవెలడి of a certain metre. 4. As a Sanskrit prefix it means Upto, Until, As far as; as ఆచంద్రార్కము or ఆచంద్రతారకము as long as the moon and the sun or stars last. ఆజానువు to the knee. అపాదమత్తకము. from head to foot. ఆబాలగోపాలము up to or including the children and the shepherds. ఆసముద్రము as far as the sea. See ఆకంఠము and ఆచండాలము. 5. A Telugu affix denoting question, or surprise as అతడా (is it) he? 6. An interjection ఆ, or ఆ ఆ, or ఆహ Yes, Aye: or Ah! A. iv. 5.

(p. 205) oṇṭu onṭu. [Tel.] n. A share, division. A village community గ్రామసమూహము. A unit in numeration. సారెని ఒంటు the place or square in which a counter stands in a game at draughts. ఒంటు or ఒంటుబావిలి. n. A sort of ear-ring worn by by men. పురుషులకర్ణభూషణము. ఒంటు v. i. To agree with one's health, to be wholesome or salubrious. ఇముడు, అనుకూలించు. To touch, to go near, to approach చేరు. ఆ దేశానికిన్ని ఈ దేశమునకున్ను ఒంటక ఆశక్తముగానున్నది or అక్కడి నీళ్లకును ఇక్కడి నీళ్లకును. ఒంటనందున వానికి ఒళ్లు కుదురులేదు his health suffered from change of water, (change of air.) See on నీళ్లు. ఒంటుకొను onṭu-konu. v. i. To touch, go near. తాకు. చేరు.

(p. 331) kau or కవు kau. [Tel.] n. In composition, stands for కౌను or కవును as కౌదీగ.

(p. 336) kro kro. [Tel.] adj. The word క్రొత్త is contracted into క్రొత్త in compounds in the following hard or soft consonants in Telugu words are doubled as క్రొక్కన్ను (క్రొత్త+కన్ను), క్రొక్కారు (క్రొత్త+కారు), క్రొత్తావి (క్రొత్త+తావి) , క్రొన్నన (క్రొత్త+నన), క్రొన్నలుపు, క్రొన్నురుగు, క్రొన్నెత్తురు, క్రొన్నల, క్రొమ్ముడి, క్రొమ్మెరుగు. క్రొమ్మొన, క్రొవ్వాడి, క్రొవ్విరి. &c. In some cases, this change is made even when a Skt. word follows, as క్రొమ్మేఘములు (భీ. iii.) In some cases, again, when a hard consonant follows, క్రొత్త is contracted into క్రొం where the సున్న stands for the letter ను but the succeding consonant is not doubled but changed into a soft one, as క్రొం౛ాయ, క్రొంజెమట, క్రొందమ్మి, క్రొంబసిడి, క్రొంబొగ, &c.

(p. 345) g or గా ga. The adverbial sign, for కాన్ as తిన్నగా correctly, slowly, gently, వంకరగా crookedly. It is added to the Infinitive in A, as చేయగ or చేయగా, చూడగ. It is also added to nouns to give them an adverbial force. పుష్పములను నీకు సాయకంబులుగ జేసె he provided thee with flowers for arrows. నల్లగనున్నది it is black. గ stands for 'గజము a yard. In prosody గ denotes గురువు a long syllable, and గా or గగము is a spondee. గ also stands for గద్య prose. In music గ is the note called mi in European music.

(p. 497) t ta. The letter T pronounced as a pure dental. A feminine suffix as in చాకిత, వ్రేత. త in ordinary writing denotes తర్వాత afterwards. In prosody it stands for the foot called తగణము which consists of two long syllables followed by a short one as వంకాయ.

(p. 507) tanu tanu. [Tel.] n. In compounds stands for తనుపు (q. v.) and తనువు. (q. v.)

(p. 531) tiryakku tiryakku. [Skt.] adj. Moving crookedly, writhing. అడ్డముగా పోవునది. Moving, animate. తిర్యగ్విధముగా tortuously. Turned away, as the face. తిర్యక్పుండ్రము a mark drawn across the forehead. తిర్యగ్జంతువు or తిర్యగ్జీవి tiryag-jantuvu. n. An animal, a bird, a snake, &c., as being prone or having the face downwards in distinction from man who stands erect. తర్యగ్యోనిజము tiryag-yōnijamu. adj. Animated, born from the womb of a living being, as distinguished from plants. 'తర్యగ్యోనిజన్మము.' V. P. iv. 2.

(p. 532) tī tī [Tel.] In compounds this stands for తిగ as తీవంచ.

(p. 588) dāpala or డాపల dāpala. [Tel.] n. The left side. ఎడమభాగము. దాపలి dāpali. adj. On the left side, left. In the inside, within, along with, in the possession of, near. నాదాపలిసొమ్ము the property in my hands. ఆమె నాదాపలునున్నది I have her by me. దాపలి వ్రాలు the letters which are inside, that is, which precede. the letter N which stands to the left of a consonant i.e., precedes it. దాపలికన్ను the small end of a drum, which is struck with the left hand. L. iv. 52. దాపలించు or దావలించు dāpa-linṭsu. v. n. To be near, to come near.

(p. 735) pāṭu pāṭu. [Tel. from పడు] n. A fall. పడుట. Suffering, శ్రమము. Labour. A movement, an action, చర్య. Distress, misfortune, hardship, mishap, ఆపద. Time, occasion. సమయము. Manner, way, mode, విధము. A declining state. The ebb of the tide. సముద్రపునీరు పొంగి తగ్గుట. రెప్పపాటు (lit: eye-lid-fall.) a wink or blink. బల్లిపాటు the fall of a lizard. చెవిటివాడు పెదవిపారు గ్రహించును a deaf man understands the motions of the lips. వారు పడే పాట్లు చెప్పనలవికాదు the hardships they suffer are indescribable. కుక్కపడేపాట్లు పడుచున్నాడు he leads the life of a dog. ఎన్నిపాట్లు పడినను వాడు చిక్కలేదు though we did all we could we did not find him. వాడు పడ్డపాట్లు వృధాగాపోవునా will all his trouble be in vain. వచ్చినపాటుననే as soon as he comes. అది ఆపాటుననే ఉన్నది it remains as it was, it remains unaltered. అది యేపాటుననున్నదో ఆపాటుననే ఉండనిమ్ము leave it as it is . అదోకపాటుగానుండేనేల a declivity, slope or descent. పోటుపాటు the ebb and flow of a river or sea, బోర్లపాటులు vile pranks. పొరపాటు an error. Added to some verbs it serves as an affix like-tion, -ness or -ment and forms a noun, as నగుబాటు laughter. తగులుబాటు cost, expenditure. దిద్దుబాటు a correction. కుదురుబాటు settlement. ఒంటరిపాటు loneliness. ఒంటరిపాటున alone, unaccompanied. ఆపాటున where-upon, thereupon, on that occasion. పనిపాటులు jobs. పాట్లమారి a drudge, మిక్కిలి శ్రమపడు స్వభావముగలవాడు. పాటుపడు pāṭu-paḍu. To toil, to labour. శ్రమపడు. పాటుసాగించు pāṭu-sāginṭsu. v. n. To cultivate, to begin cultivation operations. పాటునబడు pāṭuva-baḍu. v. n. To come back to the original position. యథాస్థితికివచ్చు.

(p. 774) pulugu pulugu. [Tel.] n. A bird. పక్షి. A mark or sign. గురుతు, ౛ాడ. 'తే గీ పొలితిరేలునీయునికియె పులుగుగాదె.' A. v. 63. పులుగుపిట్ట pulugụ-piṭṭa. n. An owl, గుడ్లగూబ. పులుగరి or పుల్గరి pulug-ari. n. One who understands a sign, ౛ూడయెరిగినవాడు. పులుగుబొల్లడు or పులుగురేడు pulugu-bollaḍu. n. An eagle, గరుత్మంతుడు. పులుగురాయి pulugu-rāyi. n. An emerald, పచ్చ, గారుత్మతము. పులుదిండిరాయి or పులుదిండిచలువ pulu-dinḍi-rāyi. n. A sapphire, ఇంద్రనీలమణి.

(p. 779) pūṭa pūṭa. [Tel.] n. A time. కాలము. A part of a day. సంధ్య. A day, దినము. Security, surety, bail. ప్రతిభూత్వము. One who stands bail for another. పూటకాపు. పగటిపూట in the day time. రాత్రిపూట at night. తెల్లవారుపూట in the morning. నాలుగుపూటలు మందిచ్చినాడు he administered medicine two mornings and two evenings. పూటకాపు pūṭa-kāpu. n. One who stands security. ప్రతిభువు. ౛ామీనుదారుడు. పూటకూడు food obtained by paying for each meal, boarding. ఏపూటకు ఆపూట సొమ్ము ఇచ్చి తినుట, వెలతీసుకొని వేళవేళకు పెట్టెడు అన్నము. పూటకూళ్లయిల్లు an inn or boarding house. పూటకూళ్లమ్మ a woman who makes her living by preparing food for daily wages. పూటపెట్టు or పూటవెట్టు. v. a. To give bail. పూటబడు or పూటబడు pūṭa-baḍu. v. n. To stand bail. అతడు నాకు పూటబడినాడు he stood security for me, అతడు నాకు ౛ామీనుగానున్నాడు. పూటసాక్షి a hired or false witness. దొంగసాక్షి, బూటకపు సాక్షి. పూటపూటకును ఇదే రచ్చ this is the daily plague, ఎల్లప్పుడు ఇదే పోరు or రంధి. పూటవాటు pūṭa-vāṭu. n. The act of standing security for another.

(p. 931) m ma. The letter M. It stands, like the English letter M for the hieroglyphie sign representing the horns of an owl. (See Taylor.) This letter when an initial is sometimes dropped in poetry. Thus ఏము is written for మేము Sometimes it is inserted to prevent elision as in ఉస్సుమనుచు, నిగనిగమనును.
