(p. 1) a a.1. The first letter of the Telugu alphabet as of many others. Hence the phrase అ ఆలు formed like the word 'alphabet' from the first two letters in the series, means the whole of the Tel. alphabet. See ఓనమాలు and వర్ణమాల. అకారము is the letter or sound of a, the term కారము being added to each letter in naming it. అకారాదిగా beginning with the letter అ seriatim, i.e., in alphabetical order. The letter అ has the same shape as the Eng. 'A' reversed. but is quite rounded off, and represents like its Semitic prototype 'the horns of an ox' (Taylor.) The stroke / called తలకట్టు tala-kaṭṭu and placed over many consonants is popularly, though by mistake as pointed out by Burnell, taken to be the secondary form of అ. The letter అ has the same sound as the Eng. a in 'around.' 'delta','Victoria. ' It is the 'low-back-wide vowel formed by the jaws, pharynx and lips wide open' and is supposed to be inherent in consonants -- e. g., in బ b, ల l, జ j.

(p. 3) aṅkuśamu ankuṣamu, [Skt.] n. An elephant goad, an elephant driver's hook. Also, a check, a bar, a poser, a ruling case or argument. అంకుశమున నిలిపినాడు he made them stop short. ఇది జ్వరాంకుశము this is a specific against fever, that which arrests the disease. కవిగజాంకుశము (title of a book) a code to guide the poets. అంకుశమునకురాని ungovernable, head-strong, untractable, indocile.

(p. 17) aṃśamu amṣamu. [Skt] n. A share, part, portion, a fraction; the denominator of one; a degree of latitude or longitude (Geog.); a subject భాగము, విషయము, దేవుని యంశమున పుట్టినవాడు he who is born from a portion of the deity, he who is of divine origin; అంశపురుషుడు a fortunate man, a man of talent or parts. వర్ణనాంశము a descriptive part or passage in a poem. ఈ అంశము నాకు తెలుసును I am acquainted with this subject. ఈ అంశములో in this respect. వాడు అన్ని అంశములు తెలిసినవాడు he knows every thing. అంశచక్రము a table consulted by astrologers in casting nativities, an astrological diagram for ascertaining the degree of the sun in any sign. దశాంసము the tenth part; అంశసవరణ = reduction of fractions; అంశనీయము or అంశ్యము = that which is divisible.

(p. 7) aṃzaliguṃzali anzaligunzali. [Tel.] a. Creating confusion; destroying; causing pain ఛిన్నాభిన్నము చేసిన, గాసినొందిన. 'తొండంబుచేపట్టి త్రోచిరాదిగిచి, యంజలి గుంజలియార్చ మైవెంచి, భుజింపుచును.' భాగ. iv. 194.

(p. 21) akṣamu akshamu. [Skt.] n. A die to play with; dice; an axle. సొగటాలపాచిక, ఇరుగు. Terrestrial latitude. అక్షకర్ణము = The hypotenuse, especially of the triangle formed with the gnomon of a dial and its shadow; in astronomy, the argument of the latitude. అక్షాగ్రము, the end of an axle. అక్షాగ్రశీలము, a linch-pin; the pin which fastens the yoke to the pole. రుద్రాక్ష, the seed of Elcocarpus Ganitrus, or of Beleric Myrobalan, which is used as a die. అక్షావపనము, a dice-board అక్షతత్వము science of dice. అక్షవిద్య aksha-vidya. (p. 26) agni agni. [Skt. Lat. ignis.] n. Fire.జఠరాగ్ని the gastric juice, the digestive power. ఆగ్నేయమూల the south-east point. అగ్నిష్టోమము a sacrifice to the god of fire. అగ్నిపురము the pudendum muliebre. శోకాగ్ని mental anguish. చింతాగ్ని corroding care. అగ్నివైద్యము the use of a cautery. అగ్నిగుండము a fire-pit. అగ్నింధనము kindling or feeding the fire. అగ్నికణము a spark of fire. అగ్ని కార్యము kindling or feeding the sacrificial fire with oblations of liquid butter. అగ్నికాష్టము Agallochum అగరుగంధపు చెక్క అగ్నిక్రియ funeral riter or other religious acts performed by means of fire. అగ్నిజిహ్వ a tongue or flame of fire. అగ్నిజ్వాల a flame of fire. త్రేతాగ్నులు the three sacred fires called గార్హపత్యము, అహవనీయము and దాక్షిణము అగ్నినక్షత్రము the Pleiades. అగ్నిపరీక్ష ordeal by fire. అగ్నిపర్వతము a volcano. అగ్నిప్రవేశము entering the fire, self-immolation by means of fire. అగ్నిబాణము an arrow of fire, a rocket. అగ్నిమంధనము production of fire by friction. అగ్నిమయము fiery. అగ్ని మాంద్యము indigestion, dyspepsia. అగ్నిరాశి a heap of fire. అగ్నివర్ణము the colour of fire. అగ్ని సంస్కారము the consecration of fire, the performance of any rite by means of fire. అగ్నిసాక్షికముగా in the presence of fire as witness. అగ్న్యాస్త్రము fire thrown as a rocket. అగ్నియుత్పాతము a fiery portent, meteor. అగ్నిమండలము a large caterpillar that destroys crops and whose touch is supposed to occasion inflammation. అగ్ని మాత n. The plant called Ceylon lead-wort. Plumbago Ẕelanica. చిత్రమూలము. అగ్నివేండపాకు ammannia baccifera or blistering Ammannia (Watts) అగ్ని శిఖ. a flame of fire. Also a plant (Gloriosa superba) తరిగొర్రెచెట్టు, కుంకుమపువ్వు చెట్టు the Saf-flower plant. అగ్నిహోత్రము fire. అగ్నిహోత్రుడు the god of fire. అగ్నిహోత్రాలు కాల్చుచున్నాడు or చేయుచున్నాడు colloquial for 'he is smoking.'

(p. 26) agramu agramu. [Skt.] n. End, point, tip, front, fore-part, top, peak, summit. adj. First, preliminary, chief, principal. అగ్రజ్యా (in astron.) the sine of the amplitude. అగ్రభాగము (astron.) degree of amplitude. అగ్రసారము a compendious method of counting immense numbers. అగ్రాంశువు the end of a ray of light, the focal point. జిహ్వాగ్రము the tip of the tongue. Similarly నాసికాగ్రము, నఖాగ్రము, &c. అగ్రగణ్యము adj. Estimable, conspicuous. శ్రేష్ఠమైన, అగ్రగణ్యుడు n. A chief, a leader. మొదట నెంచదగినవాడు అగ్రజంఘము the forepart of the thigh. అగ్రజన్ముడు n. A brahmin. Elder brother. అగ్రజుడు n. An elder brother. అన్న. అగ్రణి n. A leader.

(p. 33) aḍagiñcu aḍaginṭsu. [Tel.] v. a. To keep under, quell, depress, restrain, crush. అణుచు, పోగొట్టు. రూపడగించు to slay, ruin, destroy. చంపు. 'అరవిందముల జొక్కులడగించు జిగిహెచ్చునాయతంబగు కన్ను దోయితోడ.' A. 1. 13.

(p. 34) aḍapu or అడంపు aḍapu. [Tel.] v. a. To depress, humble, abate, quench, ruin, destroy, smite. అణచు, నశింపచేయు, చంపు. 'అడపుమాదైత్యుని.' Swa. iv. 132.

(p. 34) aḍucu or అడంచు aḍaṭsu. [Tel.] (causative of అడగు.) v. To depress, humble, abate, quench. To ruin, destroy, kill, అణచు, వధించు, కొట్టు; నరుకు.

(p. 37) aḍucu aḍuṭsu. [Tel.] v. n. To close, to shut. మూసివేయు. అందులో నాలుగు వాకిళ్లు అడిచియున్నవి four of the gates are closed, ఆ గుడ్లను ఈ పెట్టెలో అడుచు (here అడుచు is for అణచు) cram the clothes into the box. Also, v. a. To beat, strike, thrash. To destroy కొట్టు, వళింపచేయు. 'ఎమ్ములిరియుగ శిలతో నడిచిన.' P. i. 729. అడుచుకొను aḍuṭsukonu. v. To contract, choke, be stopped. ఆ కాలవలో ఇసుక అడుచుకొన్నది the channel is choked with sand. వాని రొమ్మడుచుకొన్నది he has a contraction of the chest. గొంతు అడుచుకొన్నది, మాట్లాడకూడలేదు his throat is hoarse, he cannot speak.

(p. 37) aḍupu aḍupu. [Tel.] n. A stroke, blow. దెబ్బ.

(p. 39) aṇagu aṇagu. [Tel.] v. n. To be suppressed, humbled, abated, quelled or calmed. To be ruined; to be concealed. మట్టుపడు, శాంతించు, నశించు, దాగు అణగగొట్టు aṇga-goṭṭu. [Tel.] v. a. To beat down, suppress, crush. Subdue, keep under, control. కుంగగొట్టు, క్షీణింపచేయు. అణచు or అణుచు aṇaṭsu. [Tel.] v. a. To depress, humble, abate, quench. To ruin, destroy. క్రిందికి అదుము, శాంతిపొందించు, నశింపచేయు.
