(p. 1) a a.1. The first letter of the Telugu alphabet as of many others. Hence the phrase అ ఆలు formed like the word 'alphabet' from the first two letters in the series, means the whole of the Tel. alphabet. See ఓనమాలు and వర్ణమాల. అకారము is the letter or sound of a, the term కారము being added to each letter in naming it. అకారాదిగా beginning with the letter అ seriatim, i.e., in alphabetical order. The letter అ has the same shape as the Eng. 'A' reversed. but is quite rounded off, and represents like its Semitic prototype 'the horns of an ox' (Taylor.) The stroke / called తలకట్టు tala-kaṭṭu and placed over many consonants is popularly, though by mistake as pointed out by Burnell, taken to be the secondary form of అ. The letter అ has the same sound as the Eng. a in 'around.' 'delta','Victoria. ' It is the 'low-back-wide vowel formed by the jaws, pharynx and lips wide open' and is supposed to be inherent in consonants -- e. g., in బ b, ల l, జ j.

(p. 26) agni agni. [Skt. Lat. ignis.] n. Fire.జఠరాగ్ని the gastric juice, the digestive power. ఆగ్నేయమూల the south-east point. అగ్నిష్టోమము a sacrifice to the god of fire. అగ్నిపురము the pudendum muliebre. శోకాగ్ని mental anguish. చింతాగ్ని corroding care. అగ్నివైద్యము the use of a cautery. అగ్నిగుండము a fire-pit. అగ్నింధనము kindling or feeding the fire. అగ్నికణము a spark of fire. అగ్ని కార్యము kindling or feeding the sacrificial fire with oblations of liquid butter. అగ్నికాష్టము Agallochum అగరుగంధపు చెక్క అగ్నిక్రియ funeral riter or other religious acts performed by means of fire. అగ్నిజిహ్వ a tongue or flame of fire. అగ్నిజ్వాల a flame of fire. త్రేతాగ్నులు the three sacred fires called గార్హపత్యము, అహవనీయము and దాక్షిణము అగ్నినక్షత్రము the Pleiades. అగ్నిపరీక్ష ordeal by fire. అగ్నిపర్వతము a volcano. అగ్నిప్రవేశము entering the fire, self-immolation by means of fire. అగ్నిబాణము an arrow of fire, a rocket. అగ్నిమంధనము production of fire by friction. అగ్నిమయము fiery. అగ్ని మాంద్యము indigestion, dyspepsia. అగ్నిరాశి a heap of fire. అగ్నివర్ణము the colour of fire. అగ్ని సంస్కారము the consecration of fire, the performance of any rite by means of fire. అగ్నిసాక్షికముగా in the presence of fire as witness. అగ్న్యాస్త్రము fire thrown as a rocket. అగ్నియుత్పాతము a fiery portent, meteor. అగ్నిమండలము a large caterpillar that destroys crops and whose touch is supposed to occasion inflammation. అగ్ని మాత n. The plant called Ceylon lead-wort. Plumbago Ẕelanica. చిత్రమూలము. అగ్నివేండపాకు ammannia baccifera or blistering Ammannia (Watts) అగ్ని శిఖ. a flame of fire. Also a plant (Gloriosa superba) తరిగొర్రెచెట్టు, కుంకుమపువ్వు చెట్టు the Saf-flower plant. అగ్నిహోత్రము fire. అగ్నిహోత్రుడు the god of fire. అగ్నిహోత్రాలు కాల్చుచున్నాడు or చేయుచున్నాడు colloquial for 'he is smoking.'

(p. 40) atalamu atalamu. [Skt.] n. One of the fabled subterraneous regions, supposed to be immediately below the earth. భూలోకము కింది లోకము. అతలకుతలము n. Disorder, confusion. disturbance. అల్లరి, గలిబిలి, తారుమారు. అతలకుతలమవు v. n. To be routed, scattered, dispersed. గలిబిలియగు, తారుమారగు, చెదిరిపోవు. అతలకుతలముచేయు to make a bustle or great noise, to cause a tumult or confusion. అతలకుతలముగా adv. In confusion. అల్లరిగా.

(p. 53) anu anu. [Tel.] v. n. To say, to think, to suppose. చెప్పు, తలచు, ఎంచు. (Past p.|| అని. Relative p.|| అనిన or అన్న, Aor. p.|| అనే, అనెడి, అనెడు, అనేటి. Neg. p.|| అనని.) అట్లా అంటాడు so he says. కావలెననే మనసు a desire to have it. తళుక్కుమను to shine or glitter. చేతితో ఇట్లా అన్నాడు he did so with his hand. అనుటయు on his saying so. అనగా may be translated 'or;' thus అచలముగా కొండ Achalam or hill; Achalam which means a hill. అనుడు adv. On (his) saying this. అనగా, అనేటప్పటికి, అనవుడు. అనుకొను anu-konu. [Tel.] v. n. To say, suppose, think, (middle voice of అను to say or think.) నేను ఇది యిస్తాననుకొన్నాడు he thought that I would give him this.

(p. 70) abhimānamu abhi-mānamu. [Skt.] n. Pride, self-esteem, haughtiness Patronage, protection. Affection, regard, care, love, favour. గర్వము, సంరక్షణ, విశ్వాసము, దేశాభిమానము love of one's own country, patriotism. వాడు దేహాభిమానము కలవాడు he pays great attention to his own ease. he is luxurious. అభిమానపుత్రుడు one who passes for one's son, or is looked upon as a son, or, supposed to be his child. అభిమానపుత్రత్వము an understood or attribute sonship. తమ అభిమానము కావలసినది I beg your patronage. నా యందు నిండా అభిమానముగా జరిగించినాడు he has treated me honourably. ఒకని మీద అభిమానము ఉంచు to be partial to a person. అభిమానము లేనివాడు one without affection; unkind అభిమాని n. He who loves. విశ్వాసము గలవాడు. మతాభిమాని a bigot. కులాభిమాని one who stands up for his caste. దేశాభిమాని the advocate for his country, he who loves his country, a patriot. అభిమానించు v. a. To honor, favour, protect, patronise, regard with kindness. గొప్ప చేయు, గౌరవించు.

(p. 120) ārati ārati. [Tel.] n. An oblation or wave offering, an offering of lights or of water, turmeric and chunam waved over a deity or over any individual to take off the supposed ill effects of the evil looks. హారతి or మంగళహారతి. (This ceremony answers to lustration or sprinkling with holy water.)

(p. 125) ālōcana ā-lōchana. [Skt.] n. Thought, looking at, or examining. Consultation, consideration, reflection, counsel, policy, deliberation, plan, intent, purpose, motive, imagination, supposition, advice, view, intention. ఆలోచనకు తెచ్చు to weigh, consider, view, regard. ఆలోచించు ālōchinṭsu. v. a. To think, view, consider. consult, deliberate, suppose or reflect.

(p. 130) āspadamu āspadamu. [Skt.] n. Place, room, situation: basis, ground for a supposition. సందేహాస్పదమైన doubtful. వ్యాజ్యాస్పదమైన disputed.

(p. 137) ibbandi ibbandi. [Tel. ఇను+బంది] n. Strait, inconvenience, ambiguity. నిర్బంధము. తీర్థానికి ఇబ్బందిగానున్నది water is deficient or scarce. ఇబ్బందిగానుండే irksome. ఇబ్బంది పని a troublesome affiar. ఇబ్బందికాడు a troublesome fellow. Also, a mongrel tiger supposed to be begotten by a tiger on a leopard. ఇబ్బంది గుర్రము a horse of doubtful breed.

(p. 145) īpi īpi. [Tel.] n. The dung of flies which is supposed to turn into nits. A nit. ఈపికట్టు a lump or mass of nits. ఈపి పెట్టిన fly blown.

(p. 157) udayamu udayamu. [Skt.] n. Birth. పుట్టుక. The rising of the sun or other heavenly bodies, the morning. ఉదయాన in the morning. ఉదయాద్రి udayādri. n. The eastern mountain behind which the sun is supposed to be born. ఉదయరాగము Morning carol. A particular sort of red silk. ఉదయించు udayinṭsu. v. a. To be born. To rise. To begin or originate, as a quarrel or an opinion. To arise or become celebrated. కుటిలబుద్ధి ఉదయించి crooked thoughts having arisen in the mind.

(p. 178) ūha or ఊహము ūha. [Skt.] n. Thought, reasoning, a guess, supposition, idea, contrivance. Probability, prospect. ఊహ మీద on a guess, probably. ఊహ చేయు ūha-chēyu. v. n. To think, form an opinion. ఊహపోహలు ūha-pōhalu. n. Thoughts and imaginations. (పోహ is anuk). ఊహించు ūhinṭsu. v. n. To think, reason, guess, contrive, consider, reflect on. బుద్ధినూహించుమా think within yourself అట్లు ఊహింతురు men think so.

(p. 191) erra , ఎర్రన erra. [Tel.] n. Redness ఎర్రదనము, ఎరుపు. ఎర్ర or ఎర్రని adj. Red, scarlet, crimson. ఎర్రనివాండ్రు people of fair complexion. కన్నులెర్రచేసి పలికినాడు he spoke with eyes inflamed with fury. ఎర్రనియేగాని నావద్ద లేదు I have not even a copper with me. ఎర్రకాళ్లజిట్ట erra-kaḷḷajiṭṭa. n. A small bird, Pyctorhis sinesis, the Yellow-eyed babbler (F.B.I.) ఎర్రకాళ్ల కొంగ erra-kāḷḷa-konga. n. The painted stork or pelican, ibis, Pseudotontalus leucocephalus (F.B.I.) ఎర్రకోడి erra-kōḍi. The common spurfowl. The painted sort is చిమటకోడి. Jerdon. No. 74. ఎర్రగడ్డ erra-gaḍḍa. An onion, the red garlic. ఎర్రగొల్లలు erra-gollalu. The name of a certain tribe. ఎర్రగోగిల erra-gōgila. [Tel.] n. A large red spider. ఎర్రచీమ erra-chīma. A red ant. ఎర్ర చేమంతి erra-chēmanti. Red chrysanthymum. ఎర్రన errana. n. Redness ఎరుపు. ఎర్రపోతమ్మ erra-pōtamma. n. The name of one of the village goddesses, supposed to cure diseases among cattle. ఎర్రబారు or ఎర్రవాడు erra-bāru. v. i. To become red. ఎర్రనగు. ఎర్రమన్ను erra-mannu. n. Red earth. ఎర్రమంటి గువ్వ erra-maṇṭi-guvva. n. The rufous-tailed finch lark. Ammomanes phoenicura (F.B.I.) ఎర్రమల్లె erra-malle. Red jasmine. ఎర్రమీను erra-mīnu. Red fish. ఎర్రవేలుపు erra-vēlupu. The red god, i.e., fire. అగ్ని.

(p. 198) ēni ēni. [Tel.] An affix denoting question or doubt. If, though, suppose, వాడు పామును పట్టెసేని if he catches the snake. నీవు నన్ను నమ్మవేని if you will not believe me. వచ్చేసేని suppose he came, if he comes, should he come. పుట్టిరేని వారు గిట్టిరేని what though they are born or die.

(p. 203) aitē aitē. [Tel. wrongly used for అయితే the conditional aorist of అగు] conj. If; should it be so, suppose it were so. But, As for, indeed: as నాకైతే తెలియదు I for my part do not know, lit. to me indeed it is unknown. చేను అయితే యిచ్చెనుగాని యిల్లు ఇయ్యలేదు he gave the field indeed but not the house. వాడయితే రాలేదు as for him, he did not come. పూర్వమయితే విన్నాను I heard so indeed formerly. వాడయితే తప్పు చేసినాడు కాని so far as he is concerned he is wrong.
