(p. 1) a a.1. The first letter of the Telugu alphabet as of many others. Hence the phrase అ ఆలు formed like the word 'alphabet' from the first two letters in the series, means the whole of the Tel. alphabet. See ఓనమాలు and వర్ణమాల. అకారము is the letter or sound of a, the term కారము being added to each letter in naming it. అకారాదిగా beginning with the letter అ seriatim, i.e., in alphabetical order. The letter అ has the same shape as the Eng. 'A' reversed. but is quite rounded off, and represents like its Semitic prototype 'the horns of an ox' (Taylor.) The stroke / called తలకట్టు tala-kaṭṭu and placed over many consonants is popularly, though by mistake as pointed out by Burnell, taken to be the secondary form of అ. The letter అ has the same sound as the Eng. a in 'around.' 'delta','Victoria. ' It is the 'low-back-wide vowel formed by the jaws, pharynx and lips wide open' and is supposed to be inherent in consonants -- e. g., in బ b, ల l, జ j.

(p. 2) aṅkavanne aṉka-vanne. [Tel.] n. A stirrup, or the strap that supports it అంగుపడి; 'ఇలబాదద్వయి రాయ నల్కొసగు నెందేబారుచో నంకవన్నెలురెండై.' ఆముక్త. ii. 29.

(p. 9) aṇḍa anḍa [Tel.] n. Nearness; assistance, protection, patronage. ఆసరా, ఆశ్రయము. అండగోడ a buttress, a sloping wall, built to support another. ఆయన అండ చేరి ఉన్నాను I am under his protection. ఆయనను అండచేసికొనియున్నాను I look upon him as my supporter, I hold to him.

(p. 9) aṇḍagonu anḍa-gonu. [Tel.].v. t. To seek support in. ఆశ్రయించు. 'ఈతని నొకభంగి నండగొని తప్పుదుఁజావునకు.' Bhar. Ud. iv.

(p. 18) aṃsamu amsamu. [Skt.] n. A shoulder, భుజశిరస్సు. అంసకూటము, a bull's hump. అంసపాదికట్టె a small forked prop which supports the woodwork on which a roof is laid. A small forked stake used at intervals to relieve the shoulders of those who bear a car, &c., in procession. అంసఫలకము, the upper part of the spine.

(p. 24) agise or అగిశ or అవిసెచెట్టు agise. [Tel.] n. Common flax, or lint. Linum usitatissimum; also, a leguminous tree. (Coronilla grandiflora or Ӕschynomene grandiflora, planted as a support for the betel vine.) అడివి అవిసె Kauchinia parviflora. అగిసె కూర its leaves which are dressed and eaten. ఉమ, అనగా, నూనె తీసే అవిశవిత్తులు అవిసె నూనె linseed oil. సీమ అవిసె broad leaved Cassia. (Ainslie.) నల్ల అవిసె black flax. See అవిసె.

(p. 26) agni agni. [Skt. Lat. ignis.] n. Fire.జఠరాగ్ని the gastric juice, the digestive power. ఆగ్నేయమూల the south-east point. అగ్నిష్టోమము a sacrifice to the god of fire. అగ్నిపురము the pudendum muliebre. శోకాగ్ని mental anguish. చింతాగ్ని corroding care. అగ్నివైద్యము the use of a cautery. అగ్నిగుండము a fire-pit. అగ్నింధనము kindling or feeding the fire. అగ్నికణము a spark of fire. అగ్ని కార్యము kindling or feeding the sacrificial fire with oblations of liquid butter. అగ్నికాష్టము Agallochum అగరుగంధపు చెక్క అగ్నిక్రియ funeral riter or other religious acts performed by means of fire. అగ్నిజిహ్వ a tongue or flame of fire. అగ్నిజ్వాల a flame of fire. త్రేతాగ్నులు the three sacred fires called గార్హపత్యము, అహవనీయము and దాక్షిణము అగ్నినక్షత్రము the Pleiades. అగ్నిపరీక్ష ordeal by fire. అగ్నిపర్వతము a volcano. అగ్నిప్రవేశము entering the fire, self-immolation by means of fire. అగ్నిబాణము an arrow of fire, a rocket. అగ్నిమంధనము production of fire by friction. అగ్నిమయము fiery. అగ్ని మాంద్యము indigestion, dyspepsia. అగ్నిరాశి a heap of fire. అగ్నివర్ణము the colour of fire. అగ్ని సంస్కారము the consecration of fire, the performance of any rite by means of fire. అగ్నిసాక్షికముగా in the presence of fire as witness. అగ్న్యాస్త్రము fire thrown as a rocket. అగ్నియుత్పాతము a fiery portent, meteor. అగ్నిమండలము a large caterpillar that destroys crops and whose touch is supposed to occasion inflammation. అగ్ని మాత n. The plant called Ceylon lead-wort. Plumbago Ẕelanica. చిత్రమూలము. అగ్నివేండపాకు ammannia baccifera or blistering Ammannia (Watts) అగ్ని శిఖ. a flame of fire. Also a plant (Gloriosa superba) తరిగొర్రెచెట్టు, కుంకుమపువ్వు చెట్టు the Saf-flower plant. అగ్నిహోత్రము fire. అగ్నిహోత్రుడు the god of fire. అగ్నిహోత్రాలు కాల్చుచున్నాడు or చేయుచున్నాడు colloquial for 'he is smoking.'

(p. 40) atalamu atalamu. [Skt.] n. One of the fabled subterraneous regions, supposed to be immediately below the earth. భూలోకము కింది లోకము. అతలకుతలము n. Disorder, confusion. disturbance. అల్లరి, గలిబిలి, తారుమారు. అతలకుతలమవు v. n. To be routed, scattered, dispersed. గలిబిలియగు, తారుమారగు, చెదిరిపోవు. అతలకుతలముచేయు to make a bustle or great noise, to cause a tumult or confusion. అతలకుతలముగా adv. In confusion. అల్లరిగా.

(p. 53) anu anu. [Tel.] v. n. To say, to think, to suppose. చెప్పు, తలచు, ఎంచు. (Past p.|| అని. Relative p.|| అనిన or అన్న, Aor. p.|| అనే, అనెడి, అనెడు, అనేటి. Neg. p.|| అనని.) అట్లా అంటాడు so he says. కావలెననే మనసు a desire to have it. తళుక్కుమను to shine or glitter. చేతితో ఇట్లా అన్నాడు he did so with his hand. అనుటయు on his saying so. అనగా may be translated 'or;' thus అచలముగా కొండ Achalam or hill; Achalam which means a hill. అనుడు adv. On (his) saying this. అనగా, అనేటప్పటికి, అనవుడు. అనుకొను anu-konu. [Tel.] v. n. To say, suppose, think, (middle voice of అను to say or think.) నేను ఇది యిస్తాననుకొన్నాడు he thought that I would give him this.

(p. 68) abvābu abvābu. [H.] n. (Lit. Doors, chapters.) Miscellaneous revenue accounts. 'The usual heads in Revenue accounts are Mal and Abwab. The Mal or Regular revenue is collected on land and customs, including taxes on liquors, &c The Abwab, or Miscellaneous includes the difference of exchange (often considerable) between that of the market and the fixed rate at which the revenue of the district is paid, casual aid or support of the Government officers, fees to the shroff, and contributions to various feasts.' Malcolm, vol. ii. p. 48.

(p. 70) abhimānamu abhi-mānamu. [Skt.] n. Pride, self-esteem, haughtiness Patronage, protection. Affection, regard, care, love, favour. గర్వము, సంరక్షణ, విశ్వాసము, దేశాభిమానము love of one's own country, patriotism. వాడు దేహాభిమానము కలవాడు he pays great attention to his own ease. he is luxurious. అభిమానపుత్రుడు one who passes for one's son, or is looked upon as a son, or, supposed to be his child. అభిమానపుత్రత్వము an understood or attribute sonship. తమ అభిమానము కావలసినది I beg your patronage. నా యందు నిండా అభిమానముగా జరిగించినాడు he has treated me honourably. ఒకని మీద అభిమానము ఉంచు to be partial to a person. అభిమానము లేనివాడు one without affection; unkind అభిమాని n. He who loves. విశ్వాసము గలవాడు. మతాభిమాని a bigot. కులాభిమాని one who stands up for his caste. దేశాభిమాని the advocate for his country, he who loves his country, a patriot. అభిమానించు v. a. To honor, favour, protect, patronise, regard with kindness. గొప్ప చేయు, గౌరవించు.

(p. 95) avaṣṭambhamu ava-shtambhamu. [Skt.] n. Support, stay, a post or pillar. ఆధారము, పట్టు, కంబము. నాకు మంచి అవష్టంభము లేదు I have not defender, I have no patron. తమ అవష్టంభము ఉండగా వానికెమి తక్కువ as long as he has your support what need he care?

(p. 100) aṣṭa ashṭa [Skt. cf. Eng. 'Eight,' Lat. Octo.] adj. Eight.--అష్టకష్టములు The eight unpleasant circumstances liable to occur in the course of life. [Viz. దేశాంతర గమనము foreign travel, భార్యావియోగము separation from one's wife. కష్టకాలములో ప్రియబంధుదర్శనము friends and relations arriving in the time of trouble, ఎంగిలితినడము eating the leavings of others, తన, శత్రువులతో స్నేహము చేయడము courting one's enemies, పరాన్నమునకు కాచియుండడము looking for food from strangers, సభలో అప్రతిష్ఠవచ్చుట being ignorant in an assembly of wise men, దరిద్రమనుభవించడము suffering poverty.] అష్టకోణి an octagon, అష్టదిక్కులు the eight points of the compass.--అష్టదిక్పాలకులు the regents of the eight points of the compass, viz. Indra of the East, Agni of the South-east, Yama of the South, Nairriti of the South-west, Varuṇa of the West, Marut of the North-west, Kubēra of the North, and Iṣana of the South-east.--అష్టదిగ్గజములు the elephants supporting the eight corners of the earth-అష్టనగములు the eight serpents supporting the eight angles or points of the world. Their names are as follow: వాసుకి, అనంతుడు, తక్షకుడు, శంఖపాలుడు, కుళికుడు, పద్ముడు, మహాపద్ముడు, కార్కోటకుడు. అష్టవదులు a certain set of songs of eight lines in length.-అష్టపాత్రములు the eight vessels used in a sacrifice.--అష్టభాగ్యములు the eight requisites to the regal state; as రాజ్యము territory, భండారము wealth, సేన్యము an army, ఏనుగులు elephants, గుర్రములు horses, ఛత్రము an umbrella, చామరము a fly fan or whisk, ఆందోళిక a palanquin.--అష్టభోగములు the eight sources of pleasure, viz., ఇల్లు house, పరుపు bed,వస్త్రము raiment, అభరణము jewels, స్త్రీలు women, పుష్పము, flowers, గంధము perfume, తాంబూలము areca nuts and betel-leaves.--అష్టమదములు eight kinds of pride, viz., అన్నమదము luxury in food, అర్థమదము pride of wealth, స్త్రీమదము pride of lust, విద్యామదము pride of learning, కులమదము, pride of rank and family, రూపమదము pride of beauty, ఉద్యోగమదము pride of station, యౌవనమదము pride of youth.-- అష్టస్వామ్యములు the eight respects in which an absolute conveyance is made, viz., విక్రయ, దాన, వినిమయ, జల, తరు, పాషాణ, విధి, నిక్షేపములు -- అష్టాంగములు See under అంగము. సాష్టాంగదండము prostration in worship. -అష్టాపదము an eight legged dragon: a spider. అష్టావధానము See under అవధానము. అష్టైశ్వర్యములు complete comfort, every blessing, also eight attributes, viz., అణిమ, మహిమ, గరిమ, లఘిమ, ప్రాప్తి, ప్రాకామ్యము, ఈశత్వము, వశిత్వము.

(p. 114) ādaravu ādaravu. [from Skt. ఆధారము] n. A prop, or support. Protection, aid, refuge, subsistence. కడుపులో ఆదరవులేక యుండే with empty stomach.

(p. 114) ādi ādi. [Skt.] n. The beginning. మొదలు Also, an aim గురి. ఆదిని at the beginning, at first. ఆదిముని an ancient prophet. ఆదిశేషువు ādi-ṣēshuvu. [Skt.] n. The old dragon, who is worshipped as the supporter of the earth. ఆది, ఆదిగా ādi. n. Etcetera. వాని గృహాదులు his house, &c. మన్వాదులు Manu and others. ఉత్తరాది నుంచి వచ్చినారు they came from the north. ఉత్తరాదివాండ్లు people of the north. దక్షిణాది సరుకులు goods imported from the south. ఆదికము ādikamu. n. Etcetera. అన్నాదికములు food, &c. ఆదికొను ādi-konu. v. i. To have one's eye on కన్ను వేయు 'వృషభమున కాదికొను బెబ్బులియుంబోలె.' భార: విరాట. v. ఆద్యంతములు (ఆది+అంతము) first and last. ఆద్యంత రహితుడు He who is without origin and end. God.
