(p. 1) a a.1. The first letter of the Telugu alphabet as of many others. Hence the phrase అ ఆలు formed like the word 'alphabet' from the first two letters in the series, means the whole of the Tel. alphabet. See ఓనమాలు and వర్ణమాల. అకారము is the letter or sound of a, the term కారము being added to each letter in naming it. అకారాదిగా beginning with the letter అ seriatim, i.e., in alphabetical order. The letter అ has the same shape as the Eng. 'A' reversed. but is quite rounded off, and represents like its Semitic prototype 'the horns of an ox' (Taylor.) The stroke / called తలకట్టు tala-kaṭṭu and placed over many consonants is popularly, though by mistake as pointed out by Burnell, taken to be the secondary form of అ. The letter అ has the same sound as the Eng. a in 'around.' 'delta','Victoria. ' It is the 'low-back-wide vowel formed by the jaws, pharynx and lips wide open' and is supposed to be inherent in consonants -- e. g., in బ b, ల l, జ j.

(p. 3) aṅkiñcu ankinṭsu. [Tel.] v. t. & i. 1. To raise, take up, lift up. భుజములంకించు shrug the shoulders. 2. To move about, to brandish, ఆడించు, ౛ళిపించు. 'కరవాలంబంకించి యంగదుభజాంతరంబు బిట్టు వ్రేసి.' ద్వి.రా. 3. To turn to one side త్రిప్పు. 'నమ్మెగమంకించి.' విర్వ. ఊ: viii. 4. To hold, పట్టుకొను. 'మారుతసుతుండు ఘనగదాదండ మంకించి కదలుటయును.' జై. భా. ii. 47. 5. To adopt, take or receive. అవలంబించు. 'ధర్మమేజయమనుమాట తగుగదాయని కొంతధైర్యమంకించి.' సారం. 278. 6. To look bright ఉల్లసిల్లు. 'పంకజభవాండమండపంబు సంకుచేసిన పొంకంబున నంకించుచు.' వసు. iv. 23. 7. To extol, applaud పొగడు: 'సముచితభాషణంబుల నంకించుచున్న.' భాగ. viii. 134.

(p. 14) andu andu. (a defective pronoun.) There, in that place. అక్కడ. అందుకు or అందులక thereof, thereto, for that. అందులో therein. అందున or అందుచేత thereby, by that. అందునిమిత్తము therefore. అందుమీదట adj. thereafter. అటుతర్వాత, వాడు వచ్చి చేరినందుమీదట. after his arrival. అందులకు (an affix) thereto, for that. వ్రాయగలందులకు ad scribendum, to write. అందువల్ల (an affix) thereby. పోయినందువల్ల యేమి ప్రయోజనము what is the use of going? ఆయన రాగలందులకు for his coming. నేను వచ్చేటందుకు అయిదు దినములు పట్టును it will take five days for me to come. అట్లా ఉన్నందుకు for its being so. వాడు అట్లా చేసినందుచేత as he has done so. వాడు అట్లా చేసేటందుచేత by his doing so. అందులకు ఒక ప్రతి వ్రాసినాడు he wrote a copy of it. 'ఇందుగలడందు లేడని సందేహమువలదు' there is no doubt he is every where. ఇందు అందు both here and there; here and hereafter: in this life and the next. అంద in the same place దానియందే; అందలి = అక్కడ ఉండే.

(p. 15) andukonu andukonu. [Tel.] v. a. To reach at, to get at, take with the hand. చెయ్యి చాచి పుచ్చుకొను.

(p. 17) aṃśakuḍu amṣakuḍu. [Skt.] n. He who partakes of the nature. పాతికావు.

(p. 18) aṃsamu amsamu. [Skt.] n. A shoulder, భుజశిరస్సు. అంసకూటము, a bull's hump. అంసపాదికట్టె a small forked prop which supports the woodwork on which a roof is laid. A small forked stake used at intervals to relieve the shoulders of those who bear a car, &c., in procession. అంసఫలకము, the upper part of the spine.

(p. 41) atuku atuku. [Tel.] n. Junction, union patch. ౛తపరిచినది. అతుకులబ్రతుకు living in another man's house. అతుకు v. n. To join. To agree with, to be fit. అంటుకొను అతుకు లేక అతికించు, v. t. To solder, cement, join, unite to. అంటించు, చేర్చు, జరపరచు. అతుకుబడి fixing; posting; the engagement to cultivate taken from the ryot at the commencement of the Revenue year; leasing. అతుకుబడిచేయు to rent out. అతుకుబాటు giving or letting out on rent.

(p. 47) adhiṣṭhiñcu adhi-sṭhinṭsu. [Skt.] v. n. To reside, be in. ఆశ్రయించి ఉండు, ఆవహించి ఉండు. అధిష్ఠానము adhi-sṭhānamu. [Skt.] n. Abode, residence, residing in. The place of abode. ఆశ్రయించి ఉండడము, ఉనికిపట్టు. అధిష్ఠానదేవత n. a tutelary or guardian deity, a presiding deity. విద్యాధిష్ఠానదేవత n. the patron of learning. అధిష్ఠాన n. One who takes up a residence.

(p. 56) anupānamu anu-pānamu. [Skt.] n. A vehicle in medicine, anything taken with medicine to make it less nauseous. మందుతో కూడా తీసుకొనే మధురమైన వస్తువు. 'తద్వచనౌషధంబు ప్రియానుపాన సహితంబై.' Anir. ii 108. యీ మందుకు పాలును అనుపానము చేసి పుచ్చుకో you must take milk as a vehicle to this medicine, you must take this medicine in milk.

(p. 62) apanēyamu apa-nēyamu. [Skt.] adj. That which is to be taken away, that which is to be removed. తీసివేయ తగ్గది. 'ఈయురణకంబులు రెండును నీచేత నపనేయంబుగా కుండవలయును.' Vish. vi. 74.

(p. 62) aparādhamu apa-rādhamu. [Skt.] n. A fault, sin, guilt, (commonly) a fine, punishment, penalty. శిక్షార్హమైన కర్మము, పాపము, నేరము, (వాడుకగా) నేరమునకై పుచ్చుకొనే రూకలు. అపరాధమును మన్నించు or కాచు to pardon, overlook. అపరాధక్షమయు to beg pardon. అపరాధము వేయు to inflict a fine. అపరాధముతీయు to take a fine. అపరాధి n. An offender, delinquent. నేరము చేసినవాడు. అపరాద్ధము adj Criminal, guilty, erring, faulty. అపరాధియైన, పాపియైన.

(p. 63) apahariñcu apa-harinṭsu. [Skt.] v. a. To pillage, plunder, take by violence or deceit, usurp. ముచ్చిలించు, అన్యాయముగా ఎత్తుకొని పోవు. అపహరణము apa-haraṇamu. [Skt.] n. Plundering, purloining, carrying off, stealing. చౌర్యము, ముచ్చిలించడము, అన్యాయముగా ఎత్తుకొని పోవడము. అపహర్త n. One who carries away by force or violence, a thief, rogue. అపహారము apahāramu. [Skt.] n. Pillage, plunder, taking by violence. దోచుకోవడము. సర్వస్వాపహారము robbing of everything. హాదత్తాపపాదము taking back a gift. దత్తాహృతము adj. that which is robbed or stolen.

(p. 65) appaḷiñcu appaḷinṭsu. [Tel.] v. a. To tap, touch, slap, strike gently with the open hand. To embrace, To smear, apply. తట్టు, చరచు, అంటు, యెత్తు, అలింగనము చేసికోను, చరుము. 'చప్పుడెసగతోక నప్పళించి' A iii. 27. 'దేహమునకుంకుమర సంబప్పళించి' P. iv. 419. To try. యత్నించు. To cover. కప్పు. 'లేనగవుజొల్తుక రెప్పలనప్పళించుచున్.' Swa. v. To take. గ్రహించు. (p. 74) amāni amānī. [H.] Land in charge of a revenue collector on the part of the government, as distinguished from that which is farmed out. అమానీగ్రామములు villages under the immediate care of a collector. ఆముఠా అమానీ అయిన తరువాత after the land was taken into the collector's own charge. ఆశ్రోత్రియమును అమానీదాఖలు చేసుకొన్న తరువాత after the land held on private tenure was taxed. అమానిభూములు Crown lands, lands that are in the hands of a collector on behalf of Government. అమానీబాజీబాబు sundry farms under a Collector's management. పన్ను లేకుండా మేడిపాలు ఇచ్చే భూమి.

(p. 1397) amānī amānī. [H.] n. One' own charge. అ ముఠా అమానీ అయినతరువాత after the land was taken into (the Collector's) own charge.
