(p. 21) akṣaramu aksharamu. [Skt. lit Eternal. imperishable.] n. A letter, a single syllable, a character of the alphabet, hand writing. A single syllable, whether of one letter or more. Thus the word సంస్కృతం Sam-skru-tam is termed a word of three letters. ఏకాక్షరము a monosyllable. సంయుక్తాక్షరము two or more letters united in one syllable, as స్త్రీ wherein four letters are united. త్య్రక్షరి try-ak-shari; the sacred or mystic syllable (ఓం AUM, or O'M a name of the Deity) that contains three letters. అక్షరజ్ఞుడు a man of letters. అక్షరాభ్యాసము beginning to learn the alphabet or the first principles of a language; మంత్రాక్షరము a cypher of syllable used in magic. ఇది ఆయన అక్షరము కాదు this is not his handwriting. నీవద్ద అప్పుగా తీసుకొన్న రూ 300 అక్షరాల మున్నూరు రూపాయీలు i.e., 'Rs. 300 (three hundred Rupees.)' here the same sum is denoted in writing as well as in figures. వాడు నిరక్షరకుక్షి he is an illiterate man. వానికి నోట్లో అక్షరాలు లేచియున్నవి his mouth is inflammed. అక్షరవిన్యాసము, the array of letters, writing.

(p. 56) anuprāsamu anu-prāsamu. [Skt.] n. Alliteration, repetition of similar letters, syllables and words. తుల్యవర్ణ విన్యాసము, వర్ణసామ్యమను ప్రాసఇతి. వర్ణావృత్తిరను ప్రాసః పదేపాదేవిధీయతె.

(p. 96) avācyamu a-vāchyamu. [Skt.] adj. Un-utterable, not fit to be uttered, obscene. అనరాని, ఆడరాని, ఉచ్చరింపగూడని, బండైన, బూతు అయిన.

(p. 103) asura or అసురుడు asura. [Skt. lit. 'Assyrian'.] n. A demon, giant. రాక్షసుడు. The Asuras were such as Rāvaṇa and Bana, who were adorers of Siva. అసురకృత్యము a horrible deed. అసురధ్రువము asura-dhruvamu n. The south pole. దక్షిణధ్రమము. అసురసంధ్య asura-sandhya n. The dusk, the evening. సాయంకాలము. (In the Vedas and in the cuneiform inscriptions, the word అసుర is used in the sense of (1) a nobleman, (2) a powerful being, (3) a god. In later Skt. literature, it is always used in an evil sense.)

(p. 114) ādi ādi. [Skt.] n. The beginning. మొదలు Also, an aim గురి. ఆదిని at the beginning, at first. ఆదిముని an ancient prophet. ఆదిశేషువు ādi-ṣēshuvu. [Skt.] n. The old dragon, who is worshipped as the supporter of the earth. ఆది, ఆదిగా ādi. n. Etcetera. వాని గృహాదులు his house, &c. మన్వాదులు Manu and others. ఉత్తరాది నుంచి వచ్చినారు they came from the north. ఉత్తరాదివాండ్లు people of the north. దక్షిణాది సరుకులు goods imported from the south. ఆదికము ādikamu. n. Etcetera. అన్నాదికములు food, &c. ఆదికొను ādi-konu. v. i. To have one's eye on కన్ను వేయు 'వృషభమున కాదికొను బెబ్బులియుంబోలె.' భార: విరాట. v. ఆద్యంతములు (ఆది+అంతము) first and last. ఆద్యంత రహితుడు He who is without origin and end. God.

(p. 118) āmrēḍiñcu āmrēḍinṭsu. [Skt.] v. t. To reiterate. Parij. v. 92. ఆమ్రేడితము āmrēḍitamu. adj. n. Reiterated; that which is repeated, that which is said twice. In gram. the second form of the repeated word. ద్విరుక్తము యొక్క పరరూపము.

(p. 127) āvurumanu āvuru-m-anu. [Tel.] v. n. To weep; literally, to cry 'Alas;' ఆవురుమని యేడ్చె she wept bitterly.

(p. 136) iti iti. [Skt.] A particle meaning 'This.' It shows like the Telugu 'అని' that the preceding words are a quotation, statement or reflection, and takes the place of inverted commas in English. ఇత్యాది ityādi. [ఇతి+ఆది] And so forth, etcetera. ఇత్యాదులైన పుస్తకములు = and other books. ఇత్యాదికములైన = and the like.

(p. 143) īga īga. [Tel. Tam. ఈ] n. A fly. పోతుటీగ. (from పోతు male and ట inserted) a male fly. చ నృపాలకులు ... నిగ్రహమొప్పగ పోతుటీగయున్ బొలయగనియ్యరంతిపురి.' T. iv. 17. Princes would, if possible, keep out even male flies from their seraglio. ఈగపులి īga-puli. n. A spider: literally a fly-tiger.

(p. 150) uccariñcu uchcharinṭsu. [Skt.] v. a To pronounce, articulate, recite, say. చెప్పు. ఉచ్చారణ or ఉచ్చారణము uchchāraṇa n. Pronunciation, utterance, recitation.

(p. 184) eḍagillu or ఎడగిలియుండు eḍa-gillu. [Tel.] v. n. To stand out of the way, stand aside, get out of the way ఒత్తిగిల్లు. ఎడజేయు eḍa-jēyu. v. n. To do away with, abolish. ఎడతాకు eḍa-tāku. v. t. To meet, to unite. ఎడతీయు eḍa-tīyu. v. a. To remove or abstract. తొలగించు. ఎడతెగు eḍa-tegu. v. n. To break off, separate. ఎడతెగకుండ incessantly, without interval. ఎడతెరపి eḍa-terapi. n. Interval వ్యవధానము.

(p. 197) ēḍaira ēḍtera. [Tel.] n. Fury, anger, perseverance. అతిశయము, సామర్థ్యము, శక్తి పరాక్రమము. adv. Much మిక్కిలి; at once, quickly శీఘ్రముగా 'అమ్మహీశుపెన్నురమునవాటె నారథకుడొక్క సముజ్జ్వల బాణమేడైరన్.' M. IX. i. 210.

(p. 216) ō or ఓంకారము ōm. [Skt.] The sacred syllable ఓమ్. O'M. Om. or AUM being the triliteral name of the Hindu Trinity. ప్రణవము. ఒన్నమశ్శివాయ or ఓం నమశ్శివాయ సిద్ధంనము. O Siva! I bow to thee for success.

(p. 238) kattera kattera. [Tel.] n. Scissors. The constellation or sign called కృత్తిక. The period of time when the sun is between the signs భరణి, రోహిణి and కృత్తిక. కత్తెర కాలు kattera-kālu. n. The upright cross pieces of wood in a dooly or litter, that connect the bottom with the pole above. కత్తెరగడ్డము kattera-gaddamu. n. A cropped beard. కత్తెరగాయము kattera-gāyamu. n. A certain kind of window గవాక్ష విశేషము. కత్తెరచీల kattera-chīla. n. A pin on which a lever acts. మీట ఆడే చీల. కత్తెరదొంగ kattera-donga. n. A cut purse. కత్తెరబావిలీలు kattera-bāvilīlu. n. An ornament of gold and gems worn by women near the top of the ear. కత్తెరయెండ kattera-yeṇḍa. n. Fierce heat. కత్తెరరాయ kattera-rāyi. n. Marble; a kind of black stone, which is sonorous like metal. కత్తెరవాసములు kattera-vāsamulu. n. Bamboos arranged against each other like the blades of scissors.
