(p. 1) a a.1. The first letter of the Telugu alphabet as of many others. Hence the phrase అ ఆలు formed like the word 'alphabet' from the first two letters in the series, means the whole of the Tel. alphabet. See ఓనమాలు and వర్ణమాల. అకారము is the letter or sound of a, the term కారము being added to each letter in naming it. అకారాదిగా beginning with the letter అ seriatim, i.e., in alphabetical order. The letter అ has the same shape as the Eng. 'A' reversed. but is quite rounded off, and represents like its Semitic prototype 'the horns of an ox' (Taylor.) The stroke / called తలకట్టు tala-kaṭṭu and placed over many consonants is popularly, though by mistake as pointed out by Burnell, taken to be the secondary form of అ. The letter అ has the same sound as the Eng. a in 'around.' 'delta','Victoria. ' It is the 'low-back-wide vowel formed by the jaws, pharynx and lips wide open' and is supposed to be inherent in consonants -- e. g., in బ b, ల l, జ j.

(p. 4) aṅke anke. [Tel.] n. A numerical figure అంకము. Opportunity, time. One pack, half a bullock load. A form of అణక. Bringing the yoke under the neck, as by a troublesome bullock. ఎద్దులు అంకె వేసికొన్నవి the bullocks turned restive, bringing the yoke under the neck. A command, authority, control, restraint, check. అంకెగొను v. i. To cover oneself with కప్పుకొను. అంకెచేయు v. i. To obstruct అడ్డగించు.అంకెకురాని,(భాస్క.2.) ungovernable. అంకెకురావు, అనగా అక్కరకురావు they will not be of any use. అంకెవేసికొను or అణకవేసికొను v. n. To be restive, as a bullock in the yoke. ఎద్దయకాడికెదురు తిరుగుట. నాడు తేపతేపకు అంకెవేసికొనును. he turns restive every now and then.

(p. 7) añcana or అంచనా anṭsana. [Tel.] n. An estimate, valuation, an appraisement. తుకము; చేసుకోయకమునుపు పంట ఆకళింపుచేయడము. అంచనాచూచు or వేయు to estimate crops, &c. అంచనాదారుడు an appraiser, an officer who estimates the quantity of corn in a field, or of the salt in a heap. నిలువు అంచనా, an estimate of the produce of a field before it is cut. కుప్ప అంచనా an estimate of the produce of a field after it is cut and heaped. అంచనా౛ాబితా an account of the estimated quantity of each ryot's produce.

(p. 7) añjanarāyi anjana-rāyi. [Skt. అంజనము+Tel. రాయి] n. Antimonium or black antimony. (Watts.)

(p. 9) anta anta. [Tel.] n. Whole; adj. So much. adv. Then, afterwards. నీ వెంత అడిగితే అంత యిస్తాను I will give you as much as you ask. అంతకంటె then that. అంతకంత as much again. అంతకంతకు by degrees; more and more. అంతకుముందు before that. అంతమంది so many men. అంత. మందిలో among so many persons. అంతమట్టుకు so far, thus far. అంతమాత్రము only so much అంతసేపు so long. అంతలో in the mean time. మూడంతలు three times as much. అక్కడికి పోయినంతలో on his going there. వాడు తనంతనే వచ్చినాడు he came of his own accord. అంతవాడు లేడు. there never was such a man. రాజంతవాడవు thou art equal to the king. నాయంతవాడు my equal, one like me one as tall as I am. అంతే అవును. that probably is the case నిద్రలేచినంతలో when he rose from sleep, as soon as he awoke. నేను తెలిసికొన్నంత as much as I know అంతపని such an act.

(p. 10) antaraṅguḍu anta-ranguḍu. [Skt.] n. An intimate, a confidant. మిక్కిలి ఆప్తుడు.

(p. 11) antaramu antaramu. [Skt.] n. Interval, intermediate space. Period, term. Difference, disparity. Rank. వాని అంతరమేమి నీ అంతరమేమి consider his rank and yours. అంతరమునందు in the midst. కాలాంతరమందు at another time. గ్రంథాంతర మందు in another book. ప్రత్యంతరము another copy. పాఠాంతరము another reading. వనాంతరమునందు in the forest. స్థలాంతరమందు in another place; elsewhere. భాషాంతరము a translation into another language. అతని ముఖాంతరముగా through him. దేశాంతరముపోయినాడు he is gone to another country, he is in foreign part. మతాంతరము another opinion or religion. కర్మాంతరము the funeral ceremonies.

(p. 13) antyamu antyamu. [Skt.] adj. Final, last, ultimate, concluding. కడపటి. అంత్యనియమము rhyme, the last syllables corresponding. అంత్యదశ the last con dition, i. e., death. అంత్యధనము the last member of an arithmetical series. అంత్యమూలము in arith: the last or greatest root in the square. అంత్యకాలము last time, the time of one's end. అంత్యకులుడు or అంత్యజుడు n. A pariah. మాలవాడు.

(p. 13) andanuka andanuka. [From అంత and దనుక] adv. Until then, up to that time, as far as that place, thus long, thus far. అంతపర్యంతము. అందాక.

(p. 14) andāzu andāzu. [H.] Estimate, valuation, తుకము.

(p. 15) andhruḍu andhruḍu. [Skt.] n. This word in ancient times meant a hunter, who lives by killing game. See the Laws of Manu X. 36. వ్యాధుడు, మృగవధాజీవి, కిరాతుడు.

(p. 16) ambali ambali. [Tel; plu, అంబలులు, అంబళులు or అంబళ్లు. Gen. అంబటి] n. Porridge. పిండి నూకలువేసి ౛ావగాకాచినది. చింతంబలి paste made of pounded tamarind seeds. అంబట్టి కుండ a porridge-pot. అంబటిప్రొద్దు break-fast time: about noon. 'పలుచనియంబళుల్ చెరుకుపాలెడనీళ్లు ... వడపిందెలు నీరుచల్లయున్ వెలయగబెట్టు వెసవిఁజందనచర్చమున్నగన్.' Amuk. i. 41.

(p. 19) akālamu a-kālamu. [Skt.] n. Untimeliness. unseasonableness. adj. Untimely. Unseasonable. అసమయమైన అకాలమృత్యువు an untimely death. అకాలకుసుమము a flower blossoming out of season.
