(p. 222) ?E0 The Sunna, anuswaram, or circle used for ణ, న, మ: as అండము aṇḍamu, an egg: సంతానము santānamu. Offspring: కంబు kambu, a shell. The half nasal 'ఁ' or semi circle is not used in modern Telugu, though some Pundits have made many efforts to introduce it.

(p. 1) a a.1. The first letter of the Telugu alphabet as of many others. Hence the phrase అ ఆలు formed like the word 'alphabet' from the first two letters in the series, means the whole of the Tel. alphabet. See ఓనమాలు and వర్ణమాల. అకారము is the letter or sound of a, the term కారము being added to each letter in naming it. అకారాదిగా beginning with the letter అ seriatim, i.e., in alphabetical order. The letter అ has the same shape as the Eng. 'A' reversed. but is quite rounded off, and represents like its Semitic prototype 'the horns of an ox' (Taylor.) The stroke / called తలకట్టు tala-kaṭṭu and placed over many consonants is popularly, though by mistake as pointed out by Burnell, taken to be the secondary form of అ. The letter అ has the same sound as the Eng. a in 'around.' 'delta','Victoria. ' It is the 'low-back-wide vowel formed by the jaws, pharynx and lips wide open' and is supposed to be inherent in consonants -- e. g., in బ b, ల l, జ j.

(p. 3) aṅkuśamu ankuṣamu, [Skt.] n. An elephant goad, an elephant driver's hook. Also, a check, a bar, a poser, a ruling case or argument. అంకుశమున నిలిపినాడు he made them stop short. ఇది జ్వరాంకుశము this is a specific against fever, that which arrests the disease. కవిగజాంకుశము (title of a book) a code to guide the poets. అంకుశమునకురాని ungovernable, head-strong, untractable, indocile.

(p. 4) aṅke anke. [Tel.] n. A numerical figure అంకము. Opportunity, time. One pack, half a bullock load. A form of అణక. Bringing the yoke under the neck, as by a troublesome bullock. ఎద్దులు అంకె వేసికొన్నవి the bullocks turned restive, bringing the yoke under the neck. A command, authority, control, restraint, check. అంకెగొను v. i. To cover oneself with కప్పుకొను. అంకెచేయు v. i. To obstruct అడ్డగించు.అంకెకురాని,(భాస్క.2.) ungovernable. అంకెకురావు, అనగా అక్కరకురావు they will not be of any use. అంకెవేసికొను or అణకవేసికొను v. n. To be restive, as a bullock in the yoke. ఎద్దయకాడికెదురు తిరుగుట. నాడు తేపతేపకు అంకెవేసికొనును. he turns restive every now and then.

(p. 4) aṅgada angada. [Tel.] n. Hunger. Misfortune, trouble, calamity. Mental agony or anxiety. Anger. 'అంగద లేక నిన్నహరహంబును నంకతలంబు చేర్చి.' రామా. v. 319.

(p. 9) aṇḍa anḍa [Tel.] n. Nearness; assistance, protection, patronage. ఆసరా, ఆశ్రయము. అండగోడ a buttress, a sloping wall, built to support another. ఆయన అండ చేరి ఉన్నాను I am under his protection. ఆయనను అండచేసికొనియున్నాను I look upon him as my supporter, I hold to him.

(p. 15) ande ande. [Tel.] n. A foot trinket of silver, filled with small pebbles in order to sound and worn by women on their ankles. నూపురము. అందెబందెలేని adj. Free from any trouble or annoyance. ఏ చిక్కున్నులేని, జంజాటములేని.

(p. 17) aṃśamu amṣamu. [Skt] n. A share, part, portion, a fraction; the denominator of one; a degree of latitude or longitude (Geog.); a subject భాగము, విషయము, దేవుని యంశమున పుట్టినవాడు he who is born from a portion of the deity, he who is of divine origin; అంశపురుషుడు a fortunate man, a man of talent or parts. వర్ణనాంశము a descriptive part or passage in a poem. ఈ అంశము నాకు తెలుసును I am acquainted with this subject. ఈ అంశములో in this respect. వాడు అన్ని అంశములు తెలిసినవాడు he knows every thing. అంశచక్రము a table consulted by astrologers in casting nativities, an astrological diagram for ascertaining the degree of the sun in any sign. దశాంసము the tenth part; అంశసవరణ = reduction of fractions; అంశనీయము or అంశ్యము = that which is divisible.

(p. 18) aṃhassu anhassu. [Skt. √ anh=to press together. GK. ayxw.] n. Anxiety, trouble. Sin, guilt. పాపము.

(p. 7) aṃzaliguṃzali anzaligunzali. [Tel.] a. Creating confusion; destroying; causing pain ఛిన్నాభిన్నము చేసిన, గాసినొందిన. 'తొండంబుచేపట్టి త్రోచిరాదిగిచి, యంజలి గుంజలియార్చ మైవెంచి, భుజింపుచును.' భాగ. iv. 194.

(p. 18) akaṭavikaṭamu n. Opposition, contrariety, awkardness. విరుద్ధము, ప్రతికూలము. ఎందుకు అకటవికటము చేస్తున్నావు why do you give trouble?

(p. 18) akaṭavikaṭamu akaṭa-vikaṭamu. [Tel.] adj. Adverse, contrary, awkard, inverted, contrariwise. తారుమారైన, విరుద్ధమైన, ప్రతికూలమైన, అకటవికటమైన మాట an incoherent speech, a prevarication, అకటవికటపు మాటలాడుట to shuffle, prevaricate, అకటవికటమైన పని an awkward, confused or troublesome affair.

(p. 20) aklēśamu a-klēṣamu. [Skt.] n. Freedom from sorrow or trouble.

(p. 21) akṣamu akshamu. [Skt.] n. A die to play with; dice; an axle. సొగటాలపాచిక, ఇరుగు. Terrestrial latitude. అక్షకర్ణము = The hypotenuse, especially of the triangle formed with the gnomon of a dial and its shadow; in astronomy, the argument of the latitude. అక్షాగ్రము, the end of an axle. అక్షాగ్రశీలము, a linch-pin; the pin which fastens the yoke to the pole. రుద్రాక్ష, the seed of Elcocarpus Ganitrus, or of Beleric Myrobalan, which is used as a die. అక్షావపనము, a dice-board అక్షతత్వము science of dice. అక్షవిద్య aksha-vidya. [Tel.] n. Gambling, dice-play. పాచికల ఆట. అక్షధూర్తుడు aksha-dhūrtuḍu. [Skt.] n. A game master, a gambler. జూదరి.

(p. 22) agacāṭlu agaṭsāṭlu. [Tel. from అగ్గము+చాటులు] అగ్గము+చాటులు] n. Evils, afflictions, troubles. కడగండ్లు, తిప్పలు. అగచాట్లుపడుచున్నాడు he suffers great distress. నన్ను అగచాట్లు పెట్టినాడు he brought me into trouble. అగచాట్లపోతు agaṭsāṭlapōtu. [Tel.] n. A wretch, a villain. దుష్టుడుగా తిరిగేవాడు. 'చిక్కు బిల్లలు మైనపు తేళ్లు చిక్కుముళ్లు జమిడాకు చిల్కలు తాళ్లపాములకట యగచాట్లపోతనై యాడుకొంటి.' H. iii. 192. అగచాట్లమారి agaṭsāṭlamāri. [Tel.] He who has suffered, a martyr, a sufferer. one who is thoroughly practised. నానాకడగండ్లు పడి తీరినవాడు, ఆరి తీరినవాడు.
