(p. 4) aṅganyāsamu anga-nyāsamu. [Skt.] n. Touching various parts of the body as a religious ceremony.

(p. 5) aṅgamu angamu. [Skt.] n. The body, a limb, member, part, division or branch. అంగవంచకము = ఉపాయము, సహాయము, దేశకాలవిభజనము, ఆపదకు ప్రతిక్రియ, కార్యసిద్ధి. అద్భుతాంగులు beings having wondrous forms. అష్టాంగములు = the eight forms or stages of meditation, i. e, యమము, నియమము, ప్రాణాయామము, ప్రత్యాహారము, ధ్యానము, ధారణ, మననము, సమాధి. చతురంగములు the four divisions of an army, i. e., రథములు, ఏనుగులు, గుర్రములు, బంటులు. పంచాంగము the Indian calendar giving particulars of each day, as తిథి, వారము, నక్షత్రము, యోగము, కరణము. రాజ్యాంగములు the various departments of Government. షడంగములు or వేదాంగములు the six sciences dependent on the Vedas. i. e., శిక్ష, కల్పము, వ్యాకరణము, నిరుక్తము, జ్యోతిషము, ఛందస్సు. సప్తాంగములు = the seven constituents of a Government. స్వామి, అమాత్యుడు, సుహృత్తు, కోశము, రాష్ట్రము, దుర్గము, బలము. సాష్టాంగ ప్రణామము prostrate homage, touching the ground with eight members of the body, i. e., eyes or chest and forehead, hands, knees and feet.

(p. 18) akaṭavikaṭamu akaṭa-vikaṭamu. [Tel.] adj. Adverse, contrary, awkard, inverted, contrariwise. తారుమారైన, విరుద్ధమైన, ప్రతికూలమైన, అకటవికటమైన మాట an incoherent speech, a prevarication, అకటవికటపు మాటలాడుట to shuffle, prevaricate, అకటవికటమైన పని an awkward, confused or troublesome affair.

(p. 20) akkili akkili. [Tel. a variant form of అక్కలి n. Confusion. కలత. అక్కిలిపడు to be confused. 'అక్కిలిపడి రెప్పరెల్ల మోడ్చుచును.' Bhag. vii.

(p. 57) anuvari anuvari. [Tel. from అనువు+అరి] See అనువు.

(p. 68) abvābu abvābu. [H.] n. (Lit. Doors, chapters.) Miscellaneous revenue accounts. 'The usual heads in Revenue accounts are Mal and Abwab. The Mal or Regular revenue is collected on land and customs, including taxes on liquors, &c The Abwab, or Miscellaneous includes the difference of exchange (often considerable) between that of the market and the fixed rate at which the revenue of the district is paid, casual aid or support of the Government officers, fees to the shroff, and contributions to various feasts.' Malcolm, vol. ii. p. 48.

(p. 88) alavaḍu ala-vaḍu. [Tel.] v. n. To be accustomed, be practised in. To be mastered, అభ్యాసమగు, పరిచయమగు, సాధ్యమగు. 'బ్రహ్మలోక పర్యతంబున్ గల యవివరించి చూచి తినలవడదిది నీవెతెలుపు హంపబడౌజ.' H. ii. 67. 'వీనియందలవడగల్గదీ జలరుహాక్షులకుంబ్రియ మెవ్విధంబునన్.' Swa. vi. 74. అలవరించు or అలవరచు ala-varinṭsu. v. a. To make, celebrate. To put on. చేయు, ధరించు, పెట్టు. 'వేదోక్త పద్ధతి వెలయంగ యాగంబులలవరించిన సోమయాజులకును.' N. iv. 106. 'హరిచందనము పూతలందంబుగా మేననలవరించి.' N. ii. 425. అలవరుచు, అలవర్చు or అలవరించు v. a. To habituate, accustom, excercise, teach. వాడుకచేయు, అభ్యాసపరుచు, పనుపరుచు, నేర్పు. అలవాటు ala-vāṭu. n. Use, habit,custom, practice. వాడుక, అభ్యాసము. అలవాటుగా నుండే adj. Customary, usual. వాడుకైన.

(p. 90) alli alli. [Tel.] n. The water plant called Nymphœa alba. అల్లికాడ is peduncle or flower stalk. అల్లిపువ్వు the flower of this water plant. ఉత్పలభేదము. ఆకాశపు అల్లి Menyanthes cristata, a water plant. అల్లి Nymphœa Lotus, a variety with a red flower. Rox. ii. 260, says. 'అల్లి is Memecylon Edule: a wild shrub, like broom, with beautiful fragrant flowers in bunches.' దాని ఒళ్లు అల్లికాడవలెనున్నది her body is like the stem of a water lily, she is very chilly. అల్లిరాగులు the fruit of the blue lotus.

(p. 99) aśōkamu aṣōkamu. [Skt.] n. The Jonesia Asoca, or, the Uvaria longifolia. వంజుళము. అశోకము adj. Free from sorrow. దుఃఖములేని.

(p. 105) ā The broad vowel A, as in arm, father. [The Secondary form of this letter is -- which is a modified form of the upright stroke | used to denote the long sound of a in Sanskrit. [The ingenuity of the inventors of the Indian Alphabets is shown by the way in which they formed the long vowels out of the short ones by giving a slightly different turn to their forms. See Taylor.] 2. The demonstrative sign, as ఆ పని that act, ఆ కథలు those stories, ఆ వెనుక after that, ఆ తెల్లవారి next morning. ఆ ఆ (or ఆయా) యిండ్లలో in the various houses. 3. As a contraction ఆ stands for ఆశ్వాసము chapter; also for a certain verse ఆటవెలడి of a certain metre. 4. As a Sanskrit prefix it means Upto, Until, As far as; as ఆచంద్రార్కము or ఆచంద్రతారకము as long as the moon and the sun or stars last. ఆజానువు to the knee. అపాదమత్తకము. from head to foot. ఆబాలగోపాలము up to or including the children and the shepherds. ఆసముద్రము as far as the sea. See ఆకంఠము and ఆచండాలము. 5. A Telugu affix denoting question, or surprise as అతడా (is it) he? 6. An interjection ఆ, or ఆ ఆ, or ఆహ Yes, Aye: or Ah! A. iv. 5.

(p. 116) ānupūrvigā or అనుపూర్వకముగా ānu-pūrvi-gā. [Skt.] adv. Invariably. Regularly, in order.

(p. 119) āyamu āyamu. [Tel. and Skt.] n. A vital part of the body. జీవస్థానము particulars, details, Receipt, gain, profit. వచ్చుబడి, ఆదాయము. Toll, tax customs, income. సుంకము. Rate, standard, fixed number. ఆయకట్టు āya-kaṭṭu. ఆయము+కట్టు.] ఆయము, లేక, ఆదాయము యొక్క నిర్ణయము, ప్రమాణము. A yard, an enclosure. Quantity, extent of land, an account specifying the varieties of kinds of soil in a certain field. ఆ యింటి ఆయకట్టుకులోగా within the compound of the house. ఆయమునకు వెచ్చమధికమైన if the expense is greater than the income. ఆయంపాటిగాయం or ఆయంపట్టుగాయం a mortal wound. ఆయముల సోకన్ to the quick.

(p. 119) āyā āyā. [Tel.] ఆ+ఆ That and that: those and those; several, various ఆయా āyā. [H. or Tam.] n. A waiting woman, a maidservant, an ayah. పనికత్తె, దాసిది.

(p. 126) āvaraṇamu āvaraṇamu. [Skt.] n. A precinct, premises, enclosure, compound; space enclosed round a house or garden. ఆవరించు or ఆవరించుకొను āvarinṭsu. v. t. To surround, hem in. To cover all over as a creeping plant or grass does. చుట్టుకొను.

(p. 127) āśa āṣa. [Skt.] n. Love, attachment, desire, wish, hope, passion, inclination, curiosity, avarice. ఆశాపాశము or ఆశాబంధము the chain of our lusts, fleshly ties. ఆశకొలుపు āsa-kolupu. v. t. To cause to desire, to allure, tempt, incite, encourage, to hold out prospects. ఆశపడు āṣa-paḍu. To desire, covet, long for. ఆశాపాతకుడు āṣā-pātakuḍu. n. A covetous man. ఆసపెట్టు āṣa-peṭṭu. To raise hopes or expectations, give hopes, tantalize. ఆశాబంధము āṣā-bandhamu. n. The bond of love or desire.
