(p. 1) a a.1. The first letter of the Telugu alphabet as of many others. Hence the phrase అ ఆలు formed like the word 'alphabet' from the first two letters in the series, means the whole of the Tel. alphabet. See ఓనమాలు and వర్ణమాల. అకారము is the letter or sound of a, the term కారము being added to each letter in naming it. అకారాదిగా beginning with the letter అ seriatim, i.e., in alphabetical order. The letter అ has the same shape as the Eng. 'A' reversed. but is quite rounded off, and represents like its Semitic prototype 'the horns of an ox' (Taylor.) The stroke / called తలకట్టు tala-kaṭṭu and placed over many consonants is popularly, though by mistake as pointed out by Burnell, taken to be the secondary form of అ. The letter అ has the same sound as the Eng. a in 'around.' 'delta','Victoria. ' It is the 'low-back-wide vowel formed by the jaws, pharynx and lips wide open' and is supposed to be inherent in consonants -- e. g., in బ b, ల l, జ j.

(p. 2) a a. 10. [Skt. from న the n sound being elided.] A negative prefix becoming AN before vowels and corresponding to the privatives à, án (Gk.), in (Lat.), and un (Eng.) Thus క్రమము regularity, అక్రమము irregularity; ఆదరణ kindness, అనాదరణ unkindness.

(p. 4) aṅgavradakṣiṇamu anga-pradakshiṇamu. [Skt.] n. Rolling the body like a log to the right for a distance or round a temple, as a religious vow or penance. ప్రార్థన చేసికొనువాడు గుడి మొదలగువాటికి ప్రదక్షిణముగా దొరలుట.

(p. 12) antasthalu antasthalu. [Skt.] n. A name given in grammar to the four consonants y,r,l,v,య, ర, ల, వ, which are considered by the Sanskrit Grammarians to be semi-vowels, and 'to be intermediate between vowels and consonants, or because they stand between the consonants and the sibilants in the alphabet.' Wms. అంతస్థమద్గరము in anat. the malleus of the ear.

(p. 28) accu acchu. [Skt.] n. A vowel. స్వరము, జీవాక్షరము.

(p. 29) ajantamu ajantamu. [Skt. అచ్+అంతము] A word which ends with a vowel.

(p. 32) aṭṭu aṭṭu. [Tel.] n. A cake roasted or baked (on an iron plate.) పెనము మీద కాల్చినది. ఇందున గురించి ఊరంతా అట్టుడికినట్టు ఉడుకుచున్నది the whole town is in a stir about this. (Homer, Odyss. xx. 10.) The whole town rings with the news. అట్టుకట్టు aṭṭtukaṭṭu. v. n. To be formed, as a cake. అట్టువలె నేర్పడుట. అట్టు పుట్టానవాలు aṭṭupuṭṭānavālu. n. An exact description. యావత్తు వివరము. అట్లతద్దె aṭlatadde. [Tel.] n. Cake-day, a feast that falls on the new moon in the month of Aswija when women offer buns in payment of vows. Plural అట్లు.

(p. 33) aṭṭe See on అట్టే under అట్టు The final long vowel ē is sometimes shortened in metre.

(p. 49) anantamu an-antamu: [Skt.] adj. Endless, eternal అంతములేని. అనంతము n. The sky. ఆకాశము. అనంతత endlessness; infinitude. అనంతరాశి ananta-rāṣi. [Skt.] An infinite quantity. అనంతవిజయము n. The name of the conch or shell of Dharmaraja. అనంతవ్రతము ananta-vratamu. [Skt.] A vow or festival observed in honor of Ananta. (Vishnu.) అనంతశక్తి anantaṣakti. [Skt.] n. Omnipotence, boundless strength or power. అనంతుడు an-antuḍu. [Skt.] n. The infinite being, an epithet of Vishnu. A name of the great dragon, the king of serpents విష్ణువు, ఆదిశేషుడు అనంతశయనుడు ananta-ṣayanuḍu. [Skt.] n. An epithet of Vishnu, (lit.) the god whose couch is the king of serpents. విష్ణువు. అనంత్యము an-antyamu. [Skt.] adv. Eternally for ever and ever.

(p. 86) alaghu a-laghu. [Skt.] adj. Not light. Heavy, large, big. భారమైన. అలఘువు a-laghuvu. n. A long vowel; a sound equal to two mātras or simple sounds. గురువు, గుర్వక్షరము. అలఘుడు a-laghuḍu. n. A man of weight. A respectable man. దొడ్డవాడు, గొప్పవాడు.

(p. 102) asi asi. [Skt.] n. A sword. ఖడ్గము. adj. Slight. అల్పమైన అనసిగాయము asi-gāyamu. n. A slight or superficial wound, a slight graze or wound. స్వల్పగాయము. అసిధారావ్రతము asī-dhāra-vratamu a vow to stand on the edge of a sword; (figuratively) being engaged in any hopelessly difficult task. అసిధేను or అసిధేనుక or అసిపుత్రి asidhēnu. n. A knife. ఛురిక, సూరకత్తి. 'సంబంద్ధాసిధేనుల్.' Parij. ii. 118. అసిపత్రము asi-patramu. [Skt.] n. The blade of a sword. కత్తి యొక్క అలుగు or the sheath. కత్తి ఒర. అసిబోవు asi-bōvu. v. n. To glance off, to miss. రవంత తగిలి తప్పిపోవు. 'జిరజిరద్రిపి వైచిన శూలమసిబోవ.' N. iv. 115. 'అసిబోవుటెట్లునాయసిబోవుమెకముల జించునాచేయమ్ముచిలుకుటమ్ము.' రామా. 2 ఆ.

(p. 105) ā The broad vowel A, as in arm, father. [The Secondary form of this letter is -- which is a modified form of the upright stroke | used to denote the long sound of a in Sanskrit. [The ingenuity of the inventors of the Indian Alphabets is shown by the way in which they formed the long vowels out of the short ones by giving a slightly different turn to their forms. See Taylor.] 2. The demonstrative sign, as ఆ పని that act, ఆ కథలు those stories, ఆ వెనుక after that, ఆ తెల్లవారి next morning. ఆ ఆ (or ఆయా) యిండ్లలో in the various houses. 3. As a contraction ఆ stands for ఆశ్వాసము chapter; also for a certain verse ఆటవెలడి of a certain metre. 4. As a Sanskrit prefix it means Upto, Until, As far as; as ఆచంద్రార్కము or ఆచంద్రతారకము as long as the moon and the sun or stars last. ఆజానువు to the knee. అపాదమత్తకము. from head to foot. ఆబాలగోపాలము up to or including the children and the shepherds. ఆసముద్రము as far as the sea. See ఆకంఠము and ఆచండాలము. 5. A Telugu affix denoting question, or surprise as అతడా (is it) he? 6. An interjection ఆ, or ఆ ఆ, or ఆహ Yes, Aye: or Ah! A. iv. 5.

(p. 142) ī The vowel ī as in machine, or ec, in scen, or ea as in mean, or ie, or mien.

(p. 147) u u. [Tel. In common writing the vowel ఉ is shaped like ర. Compare with this the Kanarese ఉ and the Skt. ఉ and Eng. U and W, all having the same origin.] The vowel U, as sounded in put, as in oo foot. Many Telugu words use A or U at pleasure: particularly in the second syllable, thus: వాలుగ or వాలగ, పరచు or పరుచు, కరగు or వరస or వరుస, అటక or అటుక, తరము or తరుము, పలకరించు or పలుకరించు. If one of these forms does not occur we must look for the word the other spelling.

(p. 148) uṇḍrāyi uṇḍrāyi. [Tel. ఉండ+రాయి] n. A ball of rice flour boiled in steam. ఉప్పినపిండిని ఉండలుగా చేసి వండినభక్ష్యము. ఉండ్రములు, ఉండ్రాలు, ఉండ్రాళ్లు uṇḍrāḷḷu. n. Cakes offered to the gods and particularly to Ganesa. ఉండ్రాళ్లపండుగ or ఉండ్రాళ్లతద్దె a feast kept by women who pay their vows by such offerings.
