(p. 129) āsarā or ఆస్రా or ఆసాను āsarā. [H. from Skt. ఆశ్రయము] .n. Shelter, support, protection, patronage. ప్రాపు, ఆదరువు, ఆధారము. ఆ ఊరికి నీళ్ల ఆసరాలేదు the village has no resources for watering the lands.

(p. 176) ūraka or ఊరికె ūraka. [Tel.] adv. Without. For nothing. Silently, merely, idly, in vain. Without cause, of itself, spontaneously, voluntarily, causelessly. Without employment; unoccupied, empty, vacant. ఇల్లు ఊరికె ఉన్నది the house is vacant. ఊరికె పోనిచ్చు to let a thing go free. ఊరికెవచ్చు without any special purpose. ఊరకుండు to submit, to still; to be passive or silent. చ ... 'ఒప్పుత, ప్పరయురసజ్ఞు లూహదెలియంగల లేఖ కపాఠకోత్తముల్, దొరికినగాక యూరకకృతుల్ రచియించుమటన్న శక్యమే.' (అల్లసాని పెద్దన్న) i.e., how can a poet compose verse without these conveniences?

(p. 176) ūru ūru. [Tel. In Chaldee Ur = town. of. 'Ur of the Chaldees.' Genit. ఊరి abl. ఊర్లు or ఊరిలో, ఊళ్లలో. Plu. ఊరులు, ఊర్లు, ఊళ్లు.] n. A village, a town. నేను ఊరికి పోయి యుండగా when I was absent from home. ఊర ūra (= ఊరి యొక్క) adj. Rustic, common, village, belonging to the town or place. Rural, country. ఊరన్ abl. At home, in the village. ఊరియందు. ఊరనున్నారు they are at home. ఊరకవి ūra-kavi. n. A rustic bard; a country poet. ఊరకంద ūra-kanda n. The root of the plant named Tacca Pinnatifida. Rox. Vol. 2. p. 172. ఊర౛ోగి ūra-zōgi. n. A wandering beggar. బిచ్చపు సన్యాసి ఊరనుయ్యి ūra-nuyyi. n. The common well; the town well. ఊరపంది ūra-pandi. n. A village pig. ఊరపిచ్చిక ūra-pichchika. n. The village sparrow: that is, the house sparrow. ఊరపిల్లి ūra-pilli. n. A domestic cat. ఊరవిందు ūra-vindu. n. A feast given to all the town on the occasion of a wedding.

(p. 670) nuḍikāramu nuḍikāramu. [Tel.] n. Style, mode of speech. వాచకము, మాట, రచనము, మాటచమత్కారము. నుడుగు or నుడువు nuḍugu. v. a. To tell. చెప్పు. నుడుగు or నుడువు n. A word or expression, a thing said, a promise; a line in verse: a bar in music. ఊరికెనుడుగులెంచి చెప్పు to sing line upon line, to pester, to dun, to reiterate. నుడుగురేడు lit: the lord of speech, Brihaspati. బృహస్పతి, గీష్పతి, నుడువు nuḍuvu. v. n. To speak. పలుకు. Suca. iii. 356. నుడువంగా as he said so, పలుకగా. నడువరి nuḍuv-ari. n. One who is ready of speech, a talkative person, మాటలమారి, వాచాలుడు. నుడువరితనము nuḍuv-ari-tanamu. n. Readiness, fluency of speech.

(p. 701) paḍu paḍu. [Tel.] v. n. To feel, To fall, పతనమగు, రాలు. To lie down, శయనించు. To be, to occur, or happen, సంభవించు, కలుగు. To be caught in a snare. To suffer pain, శ్రమమొందు. To be killed in battle. చచ్చు. To be buried, as money, పూడు. To set, అస్తమించు. v. a. To experience, అనుభవించు. To incur, undergo, enjoy, feel, పొందు. నేను పడిన బాధ నాకే తెలుసును I alone know what I have suffered. Added to nouns it forms them into verbs. సమ్మతిపడు to agree. సంతోషపడు to be pleased. సంతాపపడు to feel sorry. చింతపడు to be anxious. తిట్లుపడు to be reviled. తొందరపడు to be in distress. భయపడు to fear. మానుపడు to be stunned. వానికి నక్కిళ్లు పడినవి he has the lockjaw. It may be added in a similar way to past participles. ఉలికిపడు to start. తూగిపడు to slumber. It is also added to adjectives or verbs. ఎర్రపడు to redden, blush or turn red. వేరుపడు to be separated. ఏర్పడు to become. It may even be added to an interjection, కటకటపడు to cry Alas, to pity. తహతహపడు to be in trouble. ఆ యిల్లు పడినది that house is fallen in. ఆ వలలో నాలుగు పక్షులు పడినవి four birds were caught in the snare. అక్కడ ఒక పల్లము పడినది a hollow has formed there. ఆ యుద్ధములో నలుగురు పడినారు or పడిపోయినాడు four persons were killed in the battle. వానికి బంకపడుచున్నది he passes slime or mucus. వానికి పురుగులు పడినవి he passed worms. వానికి కుడిచెయ్యి పడినది his right hand has become paralysed. వారు వెనుకపడినారు they fell back, they retired. ఆ మతములో పడినాడు he embraced that religion. పేరుపడన renowned, celebrated, notorious. తటస్థపడినప్పుడు when an opportunity occurs. మరుగుపడినారు they went out of sight. నాకు వచ్చిన ఆపదకు వాడు అడ్డపడినాడు he stood in the way of the misfortune that happened to me. వారిద్దరికిని పడదు they do not agree, they are on bad terms. దానినోటిలో పడకుము do not put it in her power to abuse you. ఆ బావిలో మంచినీళ్లు పడినవి sweet water broke forth in the well. వానితో పడలేను I cannot get on with him. నాకు ఇప్పుడు పోవడము పడదు I cannot go now. ఇంకా విత్తనము పడలేదు the seed is not yet sown. ఆ చేనిలో అడ్డముగా పడి వారిపోయినాడు he ran away across the field. ఆ యిల్లు ఊరికె పడియున్నది that house is unoccupied. ఆ రూకలు ఊరిక పడియున్నవి that money is untouched, it is lying idle. ఆ సంసారము నా నెత్తిని పడినది that family is now left on my hands. ఆ నష్టము నా తలమిద పడినది I incurred that loss. Added to the root in A it forms the passive voice, thus కొట్టపడు to be beaten; చూడబడు to be seen. It is added at pleasure to some adverbs, thus బోర్లపడిన prostrate. తలక్రిందులుపడు to be topsy turvy, upside down, to be conceited. అది బయటపడినది it came to light. The causal form is పరుచు or పరచు. తొందరపరచు to trouble, torment. పడగొట్టు paḍa-goṭṭu. v. a. To knock down. పడదన్ను paḍa-dannu. v. a. To kick down. పడదొక్కు paḍa-lokku. v. a. To tread down. పడదోయు paḍa-dōya. v. a. To thrust down, knock down. పడవేయు paḍa-vēyu. v. a. To cast or throw down. పడిపోవు paḍi-pōvu. v. n. To fall down, to die. ఆయన పడిపోయిన తర్వాత after his decease. పడుకొను paḍu-konu. v. n. To lie down, recline. పడువ paḍuva. n. A very low place. మిక్కిలి పల్లమైనచోటు. పడువరి paḍu-vari. (పడు+వరి.) n. A crop or sprouts produced by seeds of paddy, that fall by chance as the crops are cut. పడ్డ paḍḍa. [contr. for పడిన.] pp. Fallen, &c., thus, పిలువబడ్డవాడు the man who was called. ఉంచబడ్డవాడు he who was kept there.

(p. 819) pōtu pōtu. [Tel.] n. The male of certain birds, animals and plants, పశు పక్షులలోమగది. ఆబోతు an ox, వృషభము. ఎనుబోతు a male buffalo. మేకపోతు a he-goat, a ram. నక్కపోతు a male fox. గొడ్డుపోతు a barren woman. పోతుటీగ a male fly. పోతుటేనుగు a male elephant. పోతుకరుడు the bigger surf, పెద్దఅల. పోతుతాడు the male palm tree. పోతురౌతు, an epithet of Yama, the god of Death, యముడు. పోతుపిల్ల, a male young one. పశుజాతిలో మగపిల్ల. పోతుపిల్లి a tom cat. పోతు sometimes means one who is addicted to, as తాగుబోతు a drunkard. తిండిబోతు a glutton. తూగుపోతు a sluggard వదురుబోతు a chatter box. పోతుపిచ్చిక or పెద్దపిచ్చిక pōtu-pichchika. n. The Ashy-crowned Finch Lark. Pyrrhulauda grisca. (F.B.I.) పోతురాజు or పోతరాజు pōtu-rāḍsu. n. The name of a rustic god, like Pan, worshipped throughout the Telugu, Canarese and Mahratta countries. He represents the male principle associated with the village goddesses Gangamma, Peddamma, &c. A proverb says పాడుఊరికి మంచపుకోడుపోతురాజు in a ruined village the leg of a cot is a god. cf., 'a Triton of the minnows' (Shakespeare.) బమ్మెరపోతరాజు the name of a certain poet. పోతులరాజు pōtula-rāḍzu. n. A name given to a large hound.

(p. 936) manda manda. [Tel.] n. A flock or herd of cattle. పశుసమూహము. A place where the flocks or herds are kept outside a village, ఊరికిబయట పశువులుండుచోటు. A hamlet, inhabited by herdsmen, గొల్లపల్లె. కుక్కల మంద a pack of dogs. మందకట్టు or మందకట్టుబాటు the bye-laws of shepherds. గొల్లలు ఏర్పరచుకొన్న ఏర్పాటు. ఆ చేలకు మందకట్టిరి they manured the field by penning sheep or goats on it. మందగొను manda-gonu. v. n. To come together in a crowd, మందగాకూడు. మందపిచ్చిక manda-pichchika. n. The name of a little white breasted bird with a black-head. శిరమందపిచ్చిక a species with a yellow breast. మందప్రోయాలు manda-prōyālu. n. A shepherdness; గొల్లది.

(p. 970) māṭa māṭa. [Tel.] n. A word, పదము. A promise, వాగ్దత్తము, ప్రతిజ్ఞావచనము. Slander, నింద. Opinion, rumour, వృత్తాంతము. అతడు నీ మాట చెప్పలేదు he did not speak of you. ఇది వేరే మాట this is another affair, another thing. వానిమాటకాదు this is not about him, I am not talking about him. గడియకు ఒకమాట చెప్పినాడు he changed his mind every hour. మంచిమాట (interj.) Very well. దాన్ని గురించి రెండో మాటలేదు there is no alternative. వారివిద్ద మాటలుపడినాడు he was reproached or reprimanded by them. In some phrases the word మాట need not be translated. Thus, ఆమె తిరిగీ వస్తున్నదనేమాట తెలిసి knowing that she would return. నేను దానిని కొన్నమాట రూఢి it is very true I bought it. ఆమాటే యెరుగను I know nothing of it. ఇందుచేత మాటవచ్చును by this you will get into disgrace. అతడు మాటతప్పలేదు he did not fail in his promise. మాట తప్పినవాడు మాలవాడు a promise breaker is a pariah, i.e., is a mean wretch. నేను పోయినమాట వానికి ఎట్లా తెలిసినది how did he know that I was gone? అతడు పోయేమాట ఉండేమాటా does he propose to go or stay? వాడు ఉండేమాట యింకా తెలియలేదు I do not as yet know that he will remain. మాటకుమాట word for word, literally. నా మాట అడుగుదాటకు transgress not my command. తనమీద మాటరాకుండా ఇట్లా చేసెను he did this to avoid blame. మాటవినుట to obey. ఎంతమాట what nonsense! వానిమాట వాని ఒడిలో వేసినాను I acted as he desired. నీకు మాట నాకు మూట a command is easy to give but hard to perform, or a word from you will make me rich. వెయ్యిమాటలేల why discuss it at length, in a word. ఆ పెండ్లి మాట యీ గ్రంథములో లేదు there is no mention of the marriage in this book నామాటవేరు, నీమాట వేరు I say one thing you say another, my opinion is different from yours, my case is quite different from yours. వానికి నాకు మాటలు లేవు he and I are not on speaking terms. వానితో నీకేమిమాటలు why do you speak with him? ఈమాట వింటే ఆయన యేమనును if he hears of this what will he say? కడపటిమాటయేమి what was the upshot of the business? ఇప్పట్లో వాని మాట సాగదు he has now no influence. కడకు వానిమాటే ముందరికివచ్చినది at last his words proved true. దానిని గురించి ఇంకా యేమాటా తెలియలేదు I do not yet know the result. మాటలకు పట్టుకొంటే విడవడు if he begins talking he will never stop. అదెక్కడిమాట what nonsense! such a thing is impossible. మాటలు మంచివే కాణి మనసు మంచిదికాదు he talks well but has a bad heart. ఇంకా మాటలు రాని బిడ్డ a child that cannot yet speak. వానికి ఆ ఊరిలో మాట వాసికద్దు లేక మాట సాగుతుంది he has influence in the town. ఆయన మాటకు ఎదురులేదు his word is law. మాటలకుమాత్రము పేదరికములేదు as far as words go he is rich enough. ఒక మాట యిచ్చి పదిమాటలు తీసుకొన్నాడు his reproaches were returned ten-fold. మాటకాడు māṭa-kāḍu. n. A good public speaker, సభయందు భయములేక మాటాడువాడు, వక్త. మాటకారి māṭa-kāri. n. A skilful speaker, యుక్తిగా మాటాడువాడు. A talkative person, వాచాలుడు. మాటలమారి māṭala-māri. n. A talkative person, మిక్కిలి మాటాడువాడు. మాటలాడు, మాటాడు or మాట్లాడు māṭa-l-āḍu. v. n. To speak, talk, converse, to reproach. నన్నెందుకు ఊరికె మాటలాడుతావు why reproach me for nothing? S. iii. 41.
