(p. 75) amāvāsya or అమాస amāvāsya. [Skt.] n. The last day of the lunar month on which the moon is invisible. దర్శము.

(p. 100) aṣṭa ashṭa [Skt. cf. Eng. 'Eight,' Lat. Octo.] adj. Eight.--అష్టకష్టములు The eight unpleasant circumstances liable to occur in the course of life. [Viz. దేశాంతర గమనము foreign travel, భార్యావియోగము separation from one's wife. కష్టకాలములో ప్రియబంధుదర్శనము friends and relations arriving in the time of trouble, ఎంగిలితినడము eating the leavings of others, తన, శత్రువులతో స్నేహము చేయడము courting one's enemies, పరాన్నమునకు కాచియుండడము looking for food from strangers, సభలో అప్రతిష్ఠవచ్చుట being ignorant in an assembly of wise men, దరిద్రమనుభవించడము suffering poverty.] అష్టకోణి an octagon, అష్టదిక్కులు the eight points of the compass.--అష్టదిక్పాలకులు the regents of the eight points of the compass, viz. Indra of the East, Agni of the South-east, Yama of the South, Nairriti of the South-west, Varuṇa of the West, Marut of the North-west, Kubēra of the North, and Iṣana of the South-east.--అష్టదిగ్గజములు the elephants supporting the eight corners of the earth-అష్టనగములు the eight serpents supporting the eight angles or points of the world. Their names are as follow: వాసుకి, అనంతుడు, తక్షకుడు, శంఖపాలుడు, కుళికుడు, పద్ముడు, మహాపద్ముడు, కార్కోటకుడు. అష్టవదులు a certain set of songs of eight lines in length.-అష్టపాత్రములు the eight vessels used in a sacrifice.--అష్టభాగ్యములు the eight requisites to the regal state; as రాజ్యము territory, భండారము wealth, సేన్యము an army, ఏనుగులు elephants, గుర్రములు horses, ఛత్రము an umbrella, చామరము a fly fan or whisk, ఆందోళిక a palanquin.--అష్టభోగములు the eight sources of pleasure, viz., ఇల్లు house, పరుపు bed,వస్త్రము raiment, అభరణము jewels, స్త్రీలు women, పుష్పము, flowers, గంధము perfume, తాంబూలము areca nuts and betel-leaves.--అష్టమదములు eight kinds of pride, viz., అన్నమదము luxury in food, అర్థమదము pride of wealth, స్త్రీమదము pride of lust, విద్యామదము pride of learning, కులమదము, pride of rank and family, రూపమదము pride of beauty, ఉద్యోగమదము pride of station, యౌవనమదము pride of youth.-- అష్టస్వామ్యములు the eight respects in which an absolute conveyance is made, viz., విక్రయ, దాన, వినిమయ, జల, తరు, పాషాణ, విధి, నిక్షేపములు -- అష్టాంగములు See under అంగము. సాష్టాంగదండము prostration in worship. -అష్టాపదము an eight legged dragon: a spider. అష్టావధానము See under అవధానము. అష్టైశ్వర్యములు complete comfort, every blessing, also eight attributes, viz., అణిమ, మహిమ, గరిమ, లఘిమ, ప్రాప్తి, ప్రాకామ్యము, ఈశత్వము, వశిత్వము.

Virāṭa. 93. Like a lion bursting forth in rage. 'ఓ౛గాదిట్లాడనోనీకు' L. vii. 7. 'ఒడలి గుణమువేర యో౛వేర' Vēmana. ఓ౛పడు ōza-paḍu. v. i. To be settled, to be set right క్రమపడు. ఓ౛బంతి or ఓ౛్జబంతి ōzabanti. n. The way shown by the teacher ఉపాధ్యాయుడు చూసిన పద్ధతి. A copy set by him మేలుబంతి.

The thing to be done or which ought to be. Bhāskara § 41. కార్యాకార్యము తెలియక not knowing good from bad. కార్యవాది one who looks to the main point opposed to ఖడ్గవాది a brawler. కార్యస్థుడు kāryas-thuḍu. n. A clever man, a man of ability. కార్యస్ధానము an office, a place of business. కార్యదర్శి a secretary. గౌరవకార్యదర్శి an honorary secretary.

(p. 402) ghōramu ghōramu. [Skt.] adj. Frigthful, horrible, tremendous భయంకరము ఘోరదర్శనము lit. horrid to view: cruel-eyed, i.e., a tiger. ఘోరాటవి ghōrāṭavi. n. An awful forest. BD. v. 524. ఘోరుడు ghōruḍu. n. A fierce man భయంకరుడు.

Shown. చూపబడిన. దర్శించు darṣinṭsu. v. a. To see, view. To visit. చూచు. వానికి నూరురూపాయలు దర్శించినాను I lost one hundred rupees to him, i.e., I am a loser of that sum by him. దర్శము darṣamu n. A name for the new moon. అమావాస్య.

(p. 598) dīrghamu dīrghamu. [Skt.] adj. Long, either as regards size or time. n. A long vowel; thus, సకారదీర్ఘము means సా sā. దీర్ఘకాలము a long time. దీర్ఘ జంఘము dīrgha-janghamu. n. The long shanked bird: the Adjutant. Leptoptius dubius. (F.B.I.) నిడుపాటిపిక్కగలది. i.e., బెగ్గురుపక్షి. దీర్ఘదర్శి or దూరదర్శి a far sighted man. దూరపు యోచనగలవాడు. దీర్ఘనిద్ర dīrgha-nidra. n. The long sleep, i.e., Death, పెద్ద నిద్ర, చావు. దీర్ఘబాహువు dīrgha-bāhuvu. adj. Long armed: a mythological metaphor, signifying the possession of extensive power or influence. It denotes a Hero. దీర్ఘసూత్రత dīrgha-sūtrata. n. Dilatoriness, tediousness, prolixity, spinning a long yarn, wire-drawing. 'భాస్వద్దీర్ఘ సూత్రున్.' P. ii. 163. Cautious, prudent, considerate. దీర్ఘసూత్రుడు dīrgha-sūtruḍu. n. He who is dilatory, slow. tedious. చిరక్రియుడు. దీర్ఘాయువు or దీర్ఘాయుస్సు dīrghāyuvu. n. A long life. One who has a long life to live, పెక్కేండ్లు బ్రతుకువాడు. A crow, కాకి. దీర్ఘిక dīrghika. n. A long or oval pond.

(p. 603) duśśiramu duṣ-ṣiramu. [Skt.] n. A plant, Menispermum glabrum. సుదర్శనలత, దూసరి తీగె.

(p. 605) dūramu dūramu. [Skt.] n. Distance. (Metaphorically) Distance in point of time. ఇంతదూరము all this while. దూరముగా చూడు look before you, consider well. adj. Distant, far. దూరదేశము a distant land. దూరపుదాయాది a distant heir. ఇది వ్యాజదూరమైయున్నది it is beyond a doubt. దూరముగా dūramu-gā. adv. Afar.దూరగుడు dūraguḍu. n. One who is far from (anything) బుద్ధిదూరగుడు he who is far from wisdom. దూరదర్శి dūra-darṣi. n. A sage, one who has foresight. దూరపు యోచనకలవాడు. దూరదృక్కు dūra-dṛikku. n. Farsightedness. దూరభారము dūra-bhāramu. n. A great distance. దూరుడు dūruḍu. n. He who is far from. దుష్టప్రవర్తనదూరుడై being far above such wickedness.
