(p. 100) aṣṭa ashṭa [Skt. cf. Eng. 'Eight,' Lat. Octo.] adj. Eight.--అష్టకష్టములు The eight unpleasant circumstances liable to occur in the course of life. [Viz. దేశాంతర గమనము foreign travel, భార్యావియోగము separation from one's wife. కష్టకాలములో ప్రియబంధుదర్శనము friends and relations arriving in the time of trouble, ఎంగిలితినడము eating the leavings of others, తన, శత్రువులతో స్నేహము చేయడము courting one's enemies, పరాన్నమునకు కాచియుండడము looking for food from strangers, సభలో అప్రతిష్ఠవచ్చుట being ignorant in an assembly of wise men, దరిద్రమనుభవించడము suffering poverty.] అష్టకోణి an octagon, అష్టదిక్కులు the eight points of the compass.--అష్టదిక్పాలకులు the regents of the eight points of the compass, viz. Indra of the East, Agni of the South-east, Yama of the South, Nairriti of the South-west, Varuṇa of the West, Marut of the North-west, Kubēra of the North, and Iṣana of the South-east.--అష్టదిగ్గజములు the elephants supporting the eight corners of the earth-అష్టనగములు the eight serpents supporting the eight angles or points of the world. Their names are as follow: వాసుకి, అనంతుడు, తక్షకుడు, శంఖపాలుడు, కుళికుడు, పద్ముడు, మహాపద్ముడు, కార్కోటకుడు. అష్టవదులు a certain set of songs of eight lines in length.-అష్టపాత్రములు the eight vessels used in a sacrifice.--అష్టభాగ్యములు the eight requisites to the regal state; as రాజ్యము territory, భండారము wealth, సేన్యము an army, ఏనుగులు elephants, గుర్రములు horses, ఛత్రము an umbrella, చామరము a fly fan or whisk, ఆందోళిక a palanquin.--అష్టభోగములు the eight sources of pleasure, viz., ఇల్లు house, పరుపు bed,వస్త్రము raiment, అభరణము jewels, స్త్రీలు women, పుష్పము, flowers, గంధము perfume, తాంబూలము areca nuts and betel-leaves.--అష్టమదములు eight kinds of pride, viz., అన్నమదము luxury in food, అర్థమదము pride of wealth, స్త్రీమదము pride of lust, విద్యామదము pride of learning, కులమదము, pride of rank and family, రూపమదము pride of beauty, ఉద్యోగమదము pride of station, యౌవనమదము pride of youth.-- అష్టస్వామ్యములు the eight respects in which an absolute conveyance is made, viz., విక్రయ, దాన, వినిమయ, జల, తరు, పాషాణ, విధి, నిక్షేపములు -- అష్టాంగములు See under అంగము. సాష్టాంగదండము prostration in worship. -అష్టాపదము an eight legged dragon: a spider. అష్టావధానము See under అవధానము. అష్టైశ్వర్యములు complete comfort, every blessing, also eight attributes, viz., అణిమ, మహిమ, గరిమ, లఘిమ, ప్రాప్తి, ప్రాకామ్యము, ఈశత్వము, వశిత్వము.

Dregs, lees, sediment మడ్డి స్తంభము a pole or mast smeared with lees, up which boys climb, on festival days, for prizes places on the top. ఆముదపుమడ్డి the dregs of castor-oil. adj. Foul, dull, stupid, awkward, clumsy. మడ్డియెరుపు a dull red. మడ్డితిండి foul feeding. మడ్డినిద్ర deathlike sleep, dead sleep. వాడు వట్టిమడ్డి he is a blockhead. మడ్డికాగితము maḍḍi-kāgitamu. n. A name applied to three different trees. Butea frondosa, Buchanania latifolia, and Mimusops kauki, మోరుగుచెట్టు, ప్రియాళువు, మోరటిచెట్టు, చారమామిడిచెట్టు, పాలచెట్టు. రాజావర్తము raj-āvartamu. n. A sort of lapis lazuli having a sky blue or lilac tint. This stone is ground down into powder which painters use for a delicate light blue tint. రాజార్హము worthy of a king, రాజునకుతగిన. రాజోపచారము rāj-ōpachāramu. n. Attendance on a king. homage of servants to their master. రాజునకు జరిగేశిశ్రూష.

(p. 1079) ricca or రిచ్చపాటు riṭsṭsa. [Tel.] n. Horror, terror, stupefaction. నిశ్చేష్టత, ఏమియును తోచకయుండడము. దిగులు, వితాకు, మ్రానుపాటు.' మింటునుండుటగాదని యింటిపైకి, దెచ్చుకొంటినటంచుపెన్ రిచ్చవెడలు.' A. v. 155. రిచ్చగొను or రిచ్చవడు riṭsṭsa-gonu. v. n. To be horror-struck, to be stupefied. దిగులుపడు, వితాకుపడు, మ్రానుపడు. 'అచ్చటివార లాబాలగోపాలంబుగా వచ్చి రచ్చలుపడి చూచుచుండిరి.' Vish. vii. 139.

(p. 1093) laṅkiñcu lankintsu. [Tel.] v. a. To join, unite. తగిలించు, చేర్చు. To link or couple together, as two bullocks, పెనవేయు. 'గు౛్జుకోడెలబట్టుకొని ప్రీతిలంకించియుండ లంకియతోడగండుమీరి పారెనక్కోడియల్.' M. XII. iv. 39. To disgrace. అవమానించు. లంకించుకొను lankinṭsu-konu. v. a. To seize, or take by artifice. చెయి చిక్కించుకొను, తంత్రముగా వలలో వేసికొను. లంకె or లంకియ lanke. n. Coupling or tying two animals together. A link, connection. రెండుపశువుల మెడకు తాడుకట్టడము, పెన, కూడిక, సంబంధము, తగులుపాటు, కూర్చడము, సంగము. 'నీకునునాకున్ దైవంబులకెవేసెను.' Vish. vi. 31. ఆ రెండు చెరువులు లంకెలుగానున్నవి those two tanks are connected, lit: are as links. వానికి దుడ్డుకులంకె he is much attached to money. 'భార్గవతలమున భర్గస్వామికి కీలించెద లంకెగకేల్ముణుతలు.' H. iv. 303. లంకె or లంకెమానిసి lanke. n. A slave, vassal. బంటు, దాసుడు. లంకెవలుపు lanke-palupu. n. A tether that ties two animals together. లంకెపాటు lanke-pāṭu. n. Clinging together. ఒకటితోనొకటి కరుచుకొని యుండడము. Connection, తగులము. 'సీ లలనపాదంబున లంకెపాటై యుండి రాజనునేనూపురంబులార.' R. v. 280. లంకెపీట lanke-pīṭa. n. A wooden plank used in linking cattle together. పశువులను పెనవేయుపలక. లంకెపెట్టు or లంకెవేయు lanke-peṭṭu. v. a. To link together, తగులు పరుచు, పెనవేయు.

(p. 1173) vitāku vitāku. [Tel.] n. Horror, confusion, నిశ్చేష్టత, ఎటునుతోచక కలవరపడి యుండడము, Forgetfulness, absent-mindedness, పారవశ్యము, పరాకు. వితాకు or వితాకుడు. One who is confused or struck dumb. విశ్చేష్టితుడు, పరవశుడు. వితాఖుపడు vitāku-paḍu. v. n. To be confused or confounded, to be at a loss, నిశ్చేష్టితుడగు, ఎటునుతోచక కలవరముగానుండు. 'మార్గముదప్పి కంపలన్ జిక్కి మదిన్ వితాకుపడిచింతము ననుంగుచు.' G. iii. 21.

(p. 1245) śalabhamu ṣalabhmu. [Skt.] n. A grasshopper or locust, మిడుత. శలభత్వము or శలభత ṣalabhatvamu. n. The locust state: the condition of being a grass hopper. మిడతయైయుండడము. A. ii. 52.

(p. 1285) saṃsāramu sam-sāramu. [Skt.] n. The world, the mundane state. Domestic life, secular life. A family, household. పెండ్లాము బిడ్డలతో కూడియుండడము. Birth, పుట్టుక. వానికి సంసారము తప్పిపోయినది he has lost his wife. సంసారములేనివాడు one who has no wife or children. సంసారతాపత్రయములు family cares. సంసారమును నడిపించు or సంసారమునుసాగించు to support or manage a family. సంసారముచేయు sam-sāramu-chēyu. v. n. To keep house, to live a family life. కాపురముచేయు. సంసారి samsāri. n. A householder, the head or master of a family, a family man; a citizen; an honest man. A secular person as distinguished from a solitary recluse, గృహస్థుడు, గృహపతి. ఆ యూరిసంసారులు the inhabitants (కాపులు) of the village సంసారి a good or respectable woman, కులస్త్రీ.

(p. 1299) samañjasamu sa-manjasamu. [Skt.] adj. Just, right, proper, fit, correct, accurate, true. సమీచీనమైన, యోగ్యమైన, మంచి, తథ్యమైన, అవిరోధమైన, వ్యాయమైన, ఉపయుక్తమైన, 'పూర్వవైరము మనమన జొరనీక కడుసమంజస వృత్తిని.' Vish. viii. 440. n. Justice, propriety, fitness, న్యాయము, తనకు ఉచితమైన ధర్మమువలన చలింపక యుండడము.
