(p. 1) a a.1. The first letter of the Telugu alphabet as of many others. Hence the phrase అ ఆలు formed like the word 'alphabet' from the first two letters in the series, means the whole of the Tel. alphabet. See ఓనమాలు and వర్ణమాల. అకారము is the letter or sound of a, the term కారము being added to each letter in naming it. అకారాదిగా beginning with the letter అ seriatim, i.e., in alphabetical order. The letter అ has the same shape as the Eng. 'A' reversed. but is quite rounded off, and represents like its Semitic prototype 'the horns of an ox' (Taylor.) The stroke / called తలకట్టు tala-kaṭṭu and placed over many consonants is popularly, though by mistake as pointed out by Burnell, taken to be the secondary form of అ. The letter అ has the same sound as the Eng. a in 'around.' 'delta','Victoria. ' It is the 'low-back-wide vowel formed by the jaws, pharynx and lips wide open' and is supposed to be inherent in consonants -- e. g., in బ b, ల l, జ j.

(p. 5) aṅgamu angamu. [Skt.] n. The body, a limb, member, part, division or branch. అంగవంచకము = ఉపాయము, సహాయము, దేశకాలవిభజనము, ఆపదకు ప్రతిక్రియ, కార్యసిద్ధి. అద్భుతాంగులు beings having wondrous forms. అష్టాంగములు = the eight forms or stages of meditation, i. e, యమము, నియమము, ప్రాణాయామము, ప్రత్యాహారము, ధ్యానము, ధారణ, మననము, సమాధి. చతురంగములు the four divisions of an army, i. e., రథములు, ఏనుగులు, గుర్రములు, బంటులు. పంచాంగము the Indian calendar giving particulars of each day, as తిథి, వారము, నక్షత్రము, యోగము, కరణము. రాజ్యాంగములు the various departments of Government. షడంగములు or వేదాంగములు the six sciences dependent on the Vedas. i. e., శిక్ష, కల్పము, వ్యాకరణము, నిరుక్తము, జ్యోతిషము, ఛందస్సు. సప్తాంగములు = the seven constituents of a Government. స్వామి, అమాత్యుడు, సుహృత్తు, కోశము, రాష్ట్రము, దుర్గము, బలము. సాష్టాంగ ప్రణామము prostrate homage, touching the ground with eight members of the body, i. e., eyes or chest and forehead, hands, knees and feet.

(p. 14) andaru andaru. [From అంత+వారు] indef. pro. All. plu. gen. అందర or అందరియొక్క of all.

(p. 15) andhatamasamu andha-tamasamu. [Skt.] n. Thick darkness. కటికచీకటి, చిమ్మచీకటి.

(p. 17) ambu or అమ్ము ambu. [Skt.] n. An arrow, a dart. బాణము. అంబువేసినట్టు adv. exactly; hitting the mark precisely: straight as an arrow. అంబులపొది ambula-podi. [Tel.] n. A quiver of arrows. తూణీరము.

(p. 43) adaru or అదురు adaru. [Tel.] v. n. To tremble, shake, quake, shiver. To dread. కంపించు, భయపడు, భూమి అదురుచున్నది the earth trembles. దాన్ని చూడగానే వాని గుండెలు అదిరినవి his heart quivered to see this. కుడి కన్ను అదురుచున్నది my right eye tingles. వాడు వట-టి అదురుగుండె he is a coward. అడరు or అడురు n. Concussion, shaking, tremour, trembling, fear, కంపనము, చలనము, కొట్టుకొనడము, భయము. భూమి అదురు a tremour or convulsion of the earth. వానికి తండ్రి వద్ద కొంచెము అదురు ఉండవలెను he ought to fear his father. అదరుగడ or అదురుగడ adarugaḍa. [Tel.] n. Daunting, fright. బెదురు. అదరిపడు or అదిరిపడు adari-paḍu. [Tel.] v. n. To caper about, to curvet. ఉలికిపడు. to be arrogant. అదరిపాటు n. Pride. అదరిపాటున. adv. Suddenly, unexpectedly. ఏమరిపాటున, 'అదరిపాటున వారాళియుదుటు చూచి.' N. i. 126.

(p. 51) anādaramu or అనాదరణ an-ādaramu. [Skt.] n. Disrespect, disregard, contempt, తిరస్కారము, అలక్ష్యము. అనాదరణచేయు disregard, to look with indifference, to despise.

(p. 66) apradhānamu a-pradhānamu. [Skt.] n. Unimportant, secondary. అప్రాధాన్యము a-prādhānyamu. [Skt.] n. Inferiority.

(p. 67) abandara a-bandara. [Tel.] n. Disorder, confusion, irregularity. తారుమారు, రసాభాసము. అబందరగానుండే adj. Disorderly, confused, irregular. కలవరముగానుండే.

(p. 74) amalu amalu. [H.] Authority, reign, sway, government. An office or post, a public charge. Execution, fulfilment, the period of one ruler's government. ఏలుబడి, దొరతనము, హయాము. అతని అమలులో in his reign or sway. ఆ కలెక్టరు గారి అమలులో in that Collector's days. ఆ తీర్పు అమలులోకి తేబడిన తరువాత after the decision was executed. వాని మీద అమలుచేసినారు they took steps against him, they put in force against him. అమల్దారుడు an Amildar, i.e., one who exercises authority. One who puts government orders into force. A Tahsildar or revenue officer in charge of Taluq.

(p. 76) ammu ammu. [Tel.] n. An arrow; a dart. బాణము విల్లమ్ములు a bow and arrows. అమ్మువేటు the distance an arrow flies. బాణము పోయి పడునంతదూరము.

(p. 82) aruṇamu aruṇamu. [Skt.] adj. Red. ఎర్రని. అరుణత or అరుణిమ. n. Pink, dark red. ఎరుపు. ఇంచుకయెరుపు, కపిల వర్ణము, సంధ్యా రాగము. అరుణుడు aruṇuḍu. n. Sun. The charioteer of the sun. సూర్యుడు, సూర్యసారథి. అరుణోదయము aruṇōdayamu. n. The dawn of the day. వేకువజాము.

(p. 83) arghamu arghamu. [Skt.] n. Price. Adoration, worship, respect. మూల్యము, వెల, పూజ. అర్ఘబలాబలము the cheapness or dearness of commodities. అర్ఘ్యము arghyamu. n. A respectful oblation to gods or to venerable men, of rice, darbha-grass, flowers, &c., with water, or of water only. పూజార్థార్హజలాదికము. అర్ఘ్యపాత్ర a vessel for this. అర్ఘ్యపాద్యాదులు the same with the addition of water for the feet, &c అష్టార్ఘ్యములు the 8 kinds of offerings, viz., పెరుగు, తేనె, నెయ్యి, అక్షతలు, గరిక, నువ్వులు, దర్భ, పువ్వులు. అర్ఘ్యము adj. Venerable, deserving worship. పూజకు తగిన, యోగ్యమైన.

(p. 87) alazaḍi alazaḍi. [Tel.] n. Trouble, misfortune. ఆపద. Grief, affliction, sorrow. దుఃఖము, మనోదుఃఖరూపమైన విచారము. 'అల౛డి వచ్చుటకు మూలమదియెయ్యదియో.' భార. అర. vii 'నృపతికి లే వలజళ్లుభయలోక లీలల యందున్.' M. XII. ii. 352. అల౛డిదరి a;ḷazaḍi-dari. [Tel.] n. A kind of bird. పక్షి విశేషము. H. iii. 269.

(p. 94) avadhi avadhi. [Skt.] n. Boundary, period, time, conclusion, end. (colloq.) Strait, calamity, misfortune. పొలిమేర, కాలము అవసానము, ఆపద. శరీరపతనావధి as long as one lives. వానికి ఒక అవధి వచ్చినది a misfortune happened to him. అవధిక్రయపత్రము a mortgage bond with the penalty of forfeiting the mortgage after a limited time. అవధీరితము ava-dhīritamu. [Skt.] adj. Disregarded, scorned, despised. అవమానింపబడిన, తిరస్కరింపబడిన అవధూతము adj. Removed, tossed aside, cast away, thrown. తోసివేయబడిన. అవధూతుడు ava-dhūtuḍu. [Skt.] n. A naked mendicant. One who has renounced all worldly feeling and obligation. దిగంబరుడుగా తిరిగే సన్యాసి.
