(p. 1) a a.1. The first letter of the Telugu alphabet as of many others. Hence the phrase అ ఆలు formed like the word 'alphabet' from the first two letters in the series, means the whole of the Tel. alphabet. See ఓనమాలు and వర్ణమాల. అకారము is the letter or sound of a, the term కారము being added to each letter in naming it. అకారాదిగా beginning with the letter అ seriatim, i.e., in alphabetical order. The letter అ has the same shape as the Eng. 'A' reversed. but is quite rounded off, and represents like its Semitic prototype 'the horns of an ox' (Taylor.) The stroke / called తలకట్టు tala-kaṭṭu and placed over many consonants is popularly, though by mistake as pointed out by Burnell, taken to be the secondary form of అ. The letter అ has the same sound as the Eng. a in 'around.' 'delta','Victoria. ' It is the 'low-back-wide vowel formed by the jaws, pharynx and lips wide open' and is supposed to be inherent in consonants -- e. g., in బ b, ల l, జ j.

(p. 13) andagiñcu andaginṭsu. [Tel.] v. a. To dress, trim, adorn. అలంకరించు 'అన్నగకందిగింప' Ila. 1.127. 'అలజడశీల్గంటు నందగించి.' ib. 3. 68.

(p. 7) aṃzaliguṃzali anzaligunzali. [Tel.] a. Creating confusion; destroying; causing pain ఛిన్నాభిన్నము చేసిన, గాసినొందిన. 'తొండంబుచేపట్టి త్రోచిరాదిగిచి, యంజలి గుంజలియార్చ మైవెంచి, భుజింపుచును.' భాగ. iv. 194.

(p. 32) aṭṭu or అట్టుగా aṭṭu. [Tel.] adv. (A particle) So that, as, according to. అతడు వచ్చేటట్టు వ్రాయుము write a letter so that he may come. మీరు చెప్పినట్టుగా చేస్తిని I did as you bid me. ఆయన చెప్పినట్టు according to his order. వాడు ఇంకా అవతలకు పోవునట్టు అగుపడ్డాడు he seemed as though he would go further. నేను చెప్పినట్టు చేసినాడు he did as I said. వారు సాగిపోయినట్టుగా చెప్పెను he said that they had passed on. అట్టు గాక or అట్లాకాక aṭṭugāka. adv. Without being so. అట్టుల aṭṭula. adv. As soon as, soon after. వెంటనే. 'చెట్టు దిగి వచ్చినట్టుల.' H. ii. 47. Just as. ఆప్రకారము. అట్టే (for అట్లాగే) aṭṭē. [Tel.] adv. Thus. So. In the same manner, as it was. అట్టే ఉండనీ leave it as it is. నొప్పి అట్టే ఉన్నది the pain is in the same state. అట్టే పోయినాడు he went off straightway. అట్టే మాట్లాడుతూ ఉండినాడు he was talking straight on. ఆ గుర్రములట్టే ఉన్నవి the horses are as they were: they are untouched.

(p. 42) adanabadana adana-badana. [Tel.] adv. Safely, without being hurt. Economically. చెక్కుచెదరకుండా, పోణిమిగా. 'అంబునిధితీరమున కులాయంబమర్చికొని కలంగుచు టిట్టిభి గ్రుడ్లు పెట్టి పొదిగె నేమరిపాటు లేకదనబదనకలచబడకుండ నొండొంటి గలిపికొనుచు.' P. i. 616. 'అందనబదననేగూర్చి మాయప్పుదీర్చిపొమ్ము నీవన్న.' Sankara H. iv. 37.

(p. 43) adi adi. [Tel.] Pron. She, it, that. (Genitive దాని, accusative దానిని, Dative దానికి.) అది మొదలు, or అదిమొదలుగా from that time, ever since. అదివరకు until then, then, as far as that. అదిగో or అదుగో there! look! lo! behold! to be sure! అదిగాక adv. Besides which, అదిగాక adv. Therefore.

(p. 45) adharamu adharamu. [Skt.] n. Lip. పెదవి. The underlip. క్రింది పెదవి. అధురమధువు the honey of the lip. అధరము adj. Low, inferior, vile. దిగుడైన, నీచమైన. Lower. 'ప్రతతోర్థ్వాధరభాగపీఠయుగళీ భాస్వత్త్సంభ సంస్థితి.' Amuk. i. 6.

(p. 46) adhigamiñcu adhi-gaminṭsu. [Skt.] v. a. To obtain, attain, assume, to perceive, go through, go over: పొందు, గ్రహించు, చొరబడు, చదువు. 'అట్లకాకని మునివేషమధికమించె.' R. v. 259. 'అవటపర్ణంబునందుండి యచ్యుచంబు పుట్టింపమదిగోరి.' Padma. vi. 20. అధిగమము adhi-gamamu. [Skt.] Attainment, acquisition.

(p. 52) aniścayamu or అనిశ్చితము a-niṣchayamu. [Skt.] adj. Uncertain. అస్థిరమైన, సందిగ్ధమైన.

(p. 80) ariga or అరిగె ariga. [Tel.] n. A large disk, like a shield, held in processions as a royal ensign. డాలువలె బ్రహ్మాండముగా నుండేటిది, దీన్ని రాజులయెదుట పట్టుకొనెదరు. 'తేరులుకలముల తెరుగునదిరుగగా గరులుమైననాగా దిగిరులబ్రోల, నరిగెబిళ్లలుకమాలకృతి మెరయుగా నడిదంబులను మీలననుకరింప.' G. i. 22.

(p. 86) alaki alaki. n. A small vessel. కుండ, కలశము. 'యాగనిలయంబు కలపయుగలశములును నలకులుగాగులు నాదిగాగల భాండములును.' M. XIV. iii. 175.

(p. 90) alla alla. [Tel.] adj. pron. That. అల్లది. that thing. అల్లవాడు that man. అల్లంతన adj. Then, in the mean time. అంతటిలో 'అల్లమపట్టె మల్లంతనవైచి.' L. XIX. 184. అల్లదిగో or అల్లడుగో interj. Lo! behold! Look there!

(p. 93) avatariñcu ava-tarinṭsu. [Skt.] v. n. To come down, to get down into. దిగు. To be born. పుట్టు. To appear, to put on a form, to become incarnate. అవతారమెత్తు. విష్ణువు మత్స్యముగా అవతరించెను Vishnu appeared as a fish. కృష్ణుడుగా అవతరించెను he was born as Krishna, or he appeared as Krishna or he put on the form of Krishna. అవతారము ava-tāramu. [Skt.] n. Incarnation, metamorphosis. The descent of a deity from heaven in a particular shape, the appearance of any deity upon earth, origin. దేవుడు రూపాంతరమును ఎత్తడము. విష్ణువు ఎత్తిన దశావతారములు the ten incarnations of Vishnu. రామావతారమెత్తినప్పుడు when he appeared on earth as Rama. వాడు గర్వావతారము he is pride incarnate, అది క్షామావతారము she is the genius of famine. (Shakesp. 2. Hen. IV. act. 3.) 'famine in the abstract, famine embodied, or personified.' అవతారపురుషుడు avatāra-purushuḍu. n. A god man, a divinē being in human form. మహాత్ముడు.

(p. 94) avadhi avadhi. [Skt.] n. Boundary, period, time, conclusion, end. (colloq.) Strait, calamity, misfortune. పొలిమేర, కాలము అవసానము, ఆపద. శరీరపతనావధి as long as one lives. వానికి ఒక అవధి వచ్చినది a misfortune happened to him. అవధిక్రయపత్రము a mortgage bond with the penalty of forfeiting the mortgage after a limited time. అవధీరితము ava-dhīritamu. [Skt.] adj. Disregarded, scorned, despised. అవమానింపబడిన, తిరస్కరింపబడిన అవధూతము adj. Removed, tossed aside, cast away, thrown. తోసివేయబడిన. అవధూతుడు ava-dhūtuḍu. [Skt.] n. A naked mendicant. One who has renounced all worldly feeling and obligation. దిగంబరుడుగా తిరిగే సన్యాసి.

(p. 94) avapātamu ava-pātamu. [Skt.] n. A pit concealed under leaves and earth to catch elephants. ఏనుగులు మొదలైన మృగములను పట్టుకొనుటకై త్రవ్వి మీడ కర్రలను కంపలను పరచి వాటి పైన కొద్దిగా మన్ను వేయబడిన గొయ్యి, ఓదము.
