(p. 745) pāla pāla. [Tel. from పాలు milk.] n. The bird called the Indian Roller, boracias indica (F.B.I.) the flight of which is consulted as an omen. It is erroneously called a blue jay. Various varieties are called గొర్రెపాలపిట్ట and మేకపాలపిట్ట. See Jerdon No. 243. A treatise on Omens says. 'పాలగరుడతప్ప పక్షిజాతులకెల్ల నెడమమండికుడికి నెగయవలయు.' పాల or పాలతీగ n. A certain tree, ఇక్షుగంధ, క్షీరికావృక్షము; of which there are various species as, అడవిపాలతీగ Nerium reticulatum, కాకిపాలతీగ Asclepias asthmatica, దూదిపాలతీగ Asclepias volubilis, మట్టపాలతీగ Convolvulus paniculatus; చిరుపాల, అనగా ఉటని. Q. మన్నుపాల, అనగా ఉత్పల కృష్ణ. Q. పాలపండు, అనగా కనిష్ట. Q. Various species of the 'milk plant' are called మేకపాలతీగ, కుక్కపాలతీగ, &c. పాల adj. White. పాలవెండి pure silver. పాలకన్ను pāla-kannu. n. The butter that sticks to the bottom of a milk pot. పాలచెట్టు pāla-cheṭṭu. n. A species of the Mimusops tree. పాలచేప pāla-chēpa. n. A sort of Salmon. పాలచేరులు or పాలచేర్లు pāla-chērulu. n. The nerves. బీజములకు పైననుండునరాలు, గ౛్జనరాలు. 'సీ పాలచేరులపట్టి తూలింప బలిమి నీడ్చుకొని డొంకలదూరి చుట్టబెట్టు.' Swa. iv. 68. 'సీ కటికినెత్తురులతో గండలుర్లిపడంగ, జేరి పందులపాల చేర్లుకరచు.' S. i. 202. పాలటేకు or పాలతేకు pāla-ṭēku. n. The white wooded teak tree. పాలడ pālaḍa. (పాలు+అడుగు.) n. A shell used as a spoon or ladle in giving milk to a child. పాలతుత్తము or పాలతుత్తరము pāta-tuttamu. n. White vitriol. పాలపండ్లు pāla-panḍlu. n. Milk teeth. Also (from పండు,) a sort of sweet white berries. A. iv. 114. పాలపపడు pāla-pāpaḍu. n. An infant at the breast. పాలవెడిస or పాలవలిస pālapeḍisa. n. The Grey headed Myna, Sturned malabarica (F.B.I.) పాలబొంత pālabonta. n. A fish called the white mullet, Chonos salmoneus. పాలమన్ను pāla-mannu. n. White earth, pipe clay సుద్ద. పాలమాని చెక్క pāla-mānichekka. n. The 'white wood' produced by the పాలటేకు. పాలసుగంధి pāla-sugandhi. n. A plant called Country Sarasaparilla. పాలసున్నము pāla-sunnamu. n. Fine lime plaster, సున్నము. పాలసొర or పాలచొర pāla-sora. n. A fish, Carcharias laticaudus and also Carcharias cllioti or Carcharias macloti. సొర్రకోవ (F.B.I.) The white shark. సముద్రమందు మనుష్యులను భక్షించే పెద్ద చేప. పాలాకు pāl-āku. n. A certain herb. చిటిపాలాకు is one sort. పాలానుగు pālānugu. n. The white gourd, ఆనుగుతీగె, దుగ్ధతుంబి. See పాలు.

(p. 744) pārvaṇamu pārvaṇamu. [Skt. from పర్వము.] n. A certain funeral rite. పితృ దేవతలకొరకు నిచ్చేపిండము, పిండప్రదానము. పార్వణపుముద్దలు the funeral cakes.

(p. 737) pātāḷamu pātāḷamu. [Skt.] n. The nether world, Hades, క్రింది లోకము. ఆ గుంట పాతాళము వలెనున్నది that pond is as deep as Hades. ఈ బావిలో నీళ్లు పాతాళములో నున్నవి the water is very low down in this well. 'పాతాళప్రశ్నలుమాని మేల్కొనుము.' A. vi. 77. టీ పాతాళప్రశ్నలుమాని అధోగతి ప్రశ్నలు విడిచిపెట్టి, దూరప్రశ్నలుమాని, నిండా గూఢముగా నుండేదానిని అడగడమును చాలించుకొని పాతాళగంగ. పాతాళగంగ pātāḷa-ganga. n. The name of the river that flows through the Hindu Hades. Also, the name of that branch of the Krishna which flows past Sri Sailum. పాతాళభది pātāḷa-bhēdi. n. A grappling hook or drag to recover things sunk in a river.

(p. 737) pātu pātu. [Tel.] v. a. To bury, fix, set up or fasten in the ground, పూడుచు. n. The foundation, meaning that portion of a post, &c., which is underground. కొండపాతు the roots of the hills. 'క్రౌధరంబులపాతు గదలంగనేవేళ. నోలినసప్తవాయువులునీవ.' HN. iv. 11.

Milky juice or sap. చనుబాలు or చన్నుపాలు woman's milk, human milk. చెరుకుపాలు the juice of the sugar cane. టెంకాయపాలు the white juice expressed from the cocoanut kernel by pounding. (టెంకాయనీళ్లు is the water in the cocoanut.) మర్రిపాలు the milky juice of the banyan tree. పాలవంటివారు, పాల వంటి కులము men (or a tribe) like milk, i.e., candid, simple, pure, unspotted, blameless, honourable. పాలవంటి మనసు a pure mind, a simple heart. పాలుకారేముఖము a milk-distilling face, i.e., a face radiant with loveliness. పాల్గారుచెక్కుటద్దములు radiantly polished cheeks, beaming with beauty. పాలకడలి, పాల్కడలి, పాలకుప్ప, పాలమున్నీరు, పాలవాగు or పాలవెల్లి pāla-kaḍali n. The Ocean of milk. క్షీరాబ్ధి. పాలమున్నీటికూతురు Lakshmi. పాలమున్నీటి అల్లుడు Vishṇu. పాలకాయ pāla-kāya. n. A sort of biscuit, భక్ష్య విశేషము, పాలకుండ pāla-kunḍa. n. The milk pot, a certain fee claimed by various hangers on on every crop of grain. పాలవన్నె pāla-vanne. adj. Milky white, whitish, pale. పాటలవర్ణము. పాలవెల్లి pāla-velli. n. The sea of milk. పాలసముద్రము. The decorated booth or shrine erected in houses for the worship of an idol at certain feasts. పాలావు pāl-āvu. n. A milch cow. పాలుచాలాయిచ్చే ఆవు. పాలిండ్లు pāl-inḍlu. [from పాలు milk and ఇల్లు a home.] n. A woman's breasts. పాలేరు pāl-ēru. (పాలు+ఏరు.) n. The river or sea of milk. పాల కడలి. A river in South India, the Palar.
