(p. 745) pāla pāla. [Tel. from పాలు milk.] n. The bird called the Indian Roller, boracias indica (F.B.I.) the flight of which is consulted as an omen. It is erroneously called a blue jay. Various varieties are called గొర్రెపాలపిట్ట and మేకపాలపిట్ట. See Jerdon No. 243. A treatise on Omens says. 'పాలగరుడతప్ప పక్షిజాతులకెల్ల నెడమమండికుడికి నెగయవలయు.' పాల or పాలతీగ n. A certain tree, ఇక్షుగంధ, క్షీరికావృక్షము; of which there are various species as, అడవిపాలతీగ Nerium reticulatum, కాకిపాలతీగ Asclepias asthmatica, దూదిపాలతీగ Asclepias volubilis, మట్టపాలతీగ Convolvulus paniculatus; చిరుపాల, అనగా ఉటని. Q. మన్నుపాల, అనగా ఉత్పల కృష్ణ. Q. పాలపండు, అనగా కనిష్ట. Q. Various species of the 'milk plant' are called మేకపాలతీగ, కుక్కపాలతీగ, &c. పాల adj. White. పాలవెండి pure silver. పాలకన్ను pāla-kannu. n. A sort of grain. పాలకూర pāla-kūra. n. A certain pot herb. Oxystelma csculentum. కుక్కపాలకూర a forest plant, Trianthema crystallina,. Rox. ii. 444. పాలగచ్చు, పాలగార or పాలసున్నము pāla-gaṭsṭsu. n. A sort of earth, a whitish marl. పైని యిసుకగల రేగడనేల. పాలగుమ్మ Same as పాలపిట్ట. పాలగొర్రు pāla-gorru. n. A rake used in husbandry. పాలగోకుడు pāla-gokuḍu. n. The butter that sticks to the bottom of a milk pot. పాలచెట్టు pāla-cheṭṭu. n. A species of the Mimusops tree. పాలచేప pāla-chēpa. n. A sort of Salmon. పాలచేరులు or పాలచేర్లు pāla-chērulu. n. The nerves. బీజములకు పైననుండునరాలు, గ౛్జనరాలు. 'సీ పాలచేరులపట్టి తూలింప బలిమి నీడ్చుకొని డొంకలదూరి చుట్టబెట్టు.' Swa. iv. 68. 'సీ కటికినెత్తురులతో గండలుర్లిపడంగ, జేరి పందులపాల చేర్లుకరచు.' S. i. 202. పాలటేకు or పాలతేకు pāla-ṭēku. n. The white wooded teak tree. పాలడ pālaḍa. (పాలు+అడుగు.) n. A shell used as a spoon or ladle in giving milk to a child. పాలతుత్తము or పాలతుత్తరము pāta-tuttamu. n. White vitriol. పాలపండ్లు pāla-panḍlu. n. Milk teeth. Also (from పండు,) a sort of sweet white berries. A. iv. 114. పాలపపడు pāla-pāpaḍu. n. An infant at the breast. పాలవెడిస or పాలవలిస pālapeḍisa. n. The Grey headed Myna, Sturned malabarica (F.B.I.) పాలబొంత pālabonta. n. A fish called the white mullet, Chonos salmoneus. పాలమన్ను pāla-mannu. n. White earth, pipe clay సుద్ద. పాలమాని చెక్క pāla-mānichekka. n. The 'white wood' produced by the పాలటేకు. పాలసుగంధి pāla-sugandhi. n. A plant called Country Sarasaparilla. పాలసున్నము pāla-sunnamu. n. Fine lime plaster, సున్నము. పాలసొర or పాలచొర pāla-sora. n. A fish, Carcharias laticaudus and also Carcharias cllioti or Carcharias macloti. సొర్రకోవ (F.B.I.) The white shark. సముద్రమందు మనుష్యులను భక్షించే పెద్ద చేప. పాలాకు pāl-āku. n. A certain herb. చిటిపాలాకు is one sort. పాలానుగు pālānugu. n. The white gourd, ఆనుగుతీగె, దుగ్ధతుంబి. See పాలు.

(p. 741) pāra pāra. [Tel.] n. A short hoe, a spade. తవ్వునట్టి సాధనము. పారమీను pāra-mīnu. n. A fish called 'Old wife,' resembling a pomfret. పారమ్ము or పారవాతి pārammu. (పార+అమ్ము.) n. A broad-tipped arrow. 'పారమ్మెదనాటినట్లు పడెవతడుర్విన్.' G. viii. 9. పారచేతి pāra-chēti. n. A large sort of fish with a big head, a grampus. పారపరిగె a kind of sprat.

(p. 744) pārupattemu or పార్పత్తెము pāru-pattemu. [Tel.] n. The duty or office of a manager or superintendent of a village or temple. Authority, అధికారము. పారుపత్తి or పారుపత్తెకాడు pāru-patti. n. The officer in charge of a village or temple. A man in authority. అధికారి.

(p. 738) pādamu pādamu. [Skt.] n. A foot. అడుగు. A root, వేరు. A quarter, పాతిక. A foot or line of verse being a quarter of a stanza. పద్యములో నాలుగవభాగము. A ray of light, కిరణము. This is a mere conversational compliment, like 'I kiss your hands' in Spanish. పాదతీర్థము water made holy by washing a saint's feet. పాదపద్మములు lotus-like feet. పాదలాక్ష red paint for the feet of women, పారాణి. తమపాదాలసముఖానకు నా కుమారుణ్ని తెచ్చి అప్పగిస్తున్నాను permit me to introduce my son to your honour's protection. వాడు తండ్రిపాదాలమీద పడెను he fell on his father's feet. తమపాదాలవద్ద before your honour, in your presence. తమపాదాల శరణుచొచ్చినాను I throw myself on your goodness. పాదచారి pāda-chāri. n. A foot passenger. కాలిబంటు. One who goes walking, నడచి పోవువాడు. పాదజుడు pādajuḍu. n. A Sudra, because born from the feet of Brahma. పాదత్రాణము pāda-trāṇamu. n. A shoe or boot. పైజారు. పాదపము pādapamu. n. A tree. పాదపూర్ణము pāda-pūrṇamu. n. An unnecessary word inserted in verse, to fill up the measure, such as in Sanskrit the words తు, హి, చ, స్మ, హి, వై, or, in Telugu poetry the words, ఒగి, తగ, మరి, ఇల, మహి , or verbs, చెలగు, ఒప్పు, &c. పాదరసము pāda-rasamu. n. Quick-silver, mercury. రసము. పాదలి pādali. n. A base or low man, అధముడు. 'పాపపు విప్రుని పనికిగామున్ను, తాపికాడైన పాదలిమందడీడు.' HD. iii. 110.

(p. 737) pātramu pātramu. [Skt.] adj. Worthy, fit, adequate. యోగ్యము. పాత్రత pātrata. n. Fitness, worthiness. పాత్రుడు pātruḍu. n. One who is worthy, deserving or fit. అర్హుడు. యోగ్యుడు. ఆయనదయకు పాత్రుడనైతిని I was found worthy of enjoying his favour. వారు దండనకు పాత్రులైరి they were guilty, they were deserving of punishment. A king's counsellor or minister. మంత్రి. 'కోటలో గజపతివారు తమతట్టునుండిన పాత్రసామంతులను కొందరు మన్నెపువారినిని ఠాణా ఉంచినారు.' పాత్రసామంతులు means principal servants. A title assumed by the members of a particular caste of Sudras in Ganjam and Orissa, as భోగన్నహేత్రుడు, వీరన్న పాత్రు డు, &c.

(p. 739) pāpaṭamu or పాపనము pāpaṭamu. [Tel. from పాయు.] n. A harrow, or hoeing instrument. పాపటతోలు pāpaṭa-tōlu. v. n. To harrow. పాపడము pāpaḍamu. n. Harrowing. పైపాపడానకుకూలి the hire for harrowing.

(p. 736) pātara pātara. [Tel. పాతు+అర.] n. A grain pit or cellar built with a small mouth above, to preserve salt or grain ధాన్యాదుల నిక్షేపము. A treasury. నిధి. ధాన్యము పాతర పెట్టినాడు he stored up the grain in a pit. ఇసుకపాతర a pack of confusion, a puzzle. పాతరతీయు to dig a pit, or to open a grain cellar. ఇసుకపాతరపారినట్లు in a full stream. పడుపాతర a pit-fall. పాతరలు grain pits.
