(p. 970) māṭa māṭa. [Tel.] n. A word, పదము. A promise, వాగ్దత్తము, ప్రతిజ్ఞావచనము. Slander, నింద. Opinion, rumour, వృత్తాంతము. అతడు నీ మాట చెప్పలేదు he did not speak of you. ఇది వేరే మాట this is another affair, another thing. వానిమాటకాదు this is not about him, I am not talking about him. గడియకు ఒకమాట చెప్పినాడు he changed his mind every hour. మంచిమాట (interj.) Very well. దాన్ని గురించి రెండో మాటలేదు there is no alternative. వారివిద్ద మాటలుపడినాడు he was reproached or reprimanded by them. In some phrases the word మాట need not be translated. Thus, ఆమె తిరిగీ వస్తున్నదనేమాట తెలిసి knowing that she would return. నేను దానిని కొన్నమాట రూఢి it is very true I bought it. ఆమాటే యెరుగను I know nothing of it. ఇందుచేత మాటవచ్చును by this you will get into disgrace. అతడు మాటతప్పలేదు he did not fail in his promise. మాట తప్పినవాడు మాలవాడు a promise breaker is a pariah, i.e., is a mean wretch. నేను పోయినమాట వానికి ఎట్లా తెలిసినది how did he know that I was gone? అతడు పోయేమాట ఉండేమాటా does he propose to go or stay? వాడు ఉండేమాట యింకా తెలియలేదు I do not as yet know that he will remain. మాటకుమాట word for word, literally. నా మాట అడుగుదాటకు transgress not my command. తనమీద మాటరాకుండా ఇట్లా చేసెను he did this to avoid blame. మాటవినుట to obey. ఎంతమాట what nonsense! వానిమాట వాని ఒడిలో వేసినాను I acted as he desired. నీకు మాట నాకు మూట a command is easy to give but hard to perform, or a word from you will make me rich. వెయ్యిమాటలేల why discuss it at length, in a word. ఆ పెండ్లి మాట యీ గ్రంథములో లేదు there is no mention of the marriage in this book నామాటవేరు, నీమాట వేరు I say one thing you say another, my opinion is different from yours, my case is quite different from yours. వానికి నాకు మాటలు లేవు he and I are not on speaking terms. వానితో నీకేమిమాటలు why do you speak with him? ఈమాట వింటే ఆయన యేమనును if he hears of this what will he say? కడపటిమాటయేమి what was the upshot of the business? ఇప్పట్లో వాని మాట సాగదు he has now no influence. కడకు వానిమాటే ముందరికివచ్చినది at last his words proved true. దానిని గురించి ఇంకా యేమాటా తెలియలేదు I do not yet know the result. మాటలకు పట్టుకొంటే విడవడు if he begins talking he will never stop. అదెక్కడిమాట what nonsense! such a thing is impossible. మాటలు మంచివే కాణి మనసు మంచిదికాదు he talks well but has a bad heart. ఇంకా మాటలు రాని బిడ్డ a child that cannot yet speak. వానికి ఆ ఊరిలో మాట వాసికద్దు లేక మాట సాగుతుంది he has influence in the town. ఆయన మాటకు ఎదురులేదు his word is law. మాటలకుమాత్రము పేదరికములేదు as far as words go he is rich enough. ఒక మాట యిచ్చి పదిమాటలు తీసుకొన్నాడు his reproaches were returned ten-fold. మాటకాడు māṭa-kāḍu. n. A good public speaker, సభయందు భయములేక మాటాడువాడు, వక్త. మాటకారి māṭa-kāri. n. A skilful speaker, యుక్తిగా మాటాడువాడు. A talkative person, వాచాలుడు. మాటలమారి māṭala-māri. n. A talkative person, మిక్కిలి మాటాడువాడు. మాటలాడు, మాటాడు or మాట్లాడు māṭa-l-āḍu. v. n. To speak, talk, converse, to reproach. నన్నెందుకు ఊరికె మాటలాడుతావు why reproach me for nothing? S. iii. 41.

(p. 975) māma māma. [from Skt. మామక.] n. A father-in-law. Also, a mother's brother, మేనమామ. The same title is bestowed equally on the brothers of a father-in-law, as పినమామగారు, పెద్దమామగారు. The phrase శకునిమామ denotes 'Uncle Sakuni,' i.e., an evil counsellor. Sakuni was the maternal uncle of Duryōdhana. మామమామ an epithet of Vishnu, as he married Lakshmi the daughter of the Sea (సముద్రుడు) whose wife (Ganges) is related to him as a daughter, లక్ష్మీదేవిని పెండ్లాడినందున తనకు మామయైన సముద్రునికి పెండ్లామగు గంగాదేవి తనకు కూతురువరుస అగుటచేత విష్ణువు సముద్రునికి మామ అయ్యెను.

(p. 973) mānava mānava. [Skt. from మను.] adj. Written by Manu. మనువుచేత వ్రాయబడిన. మానవధర్మశాస్త్రము the Laws of Manu. Human, మనుష్య సంబంధమైన. మానవబలము human strength. మానవస్త్రీ a mortal woman, i.e., not a goddess. మానవాశనుడు mānav-āṣanuḍu. n. A cannibal, మనుష్యులను తినువాడు. మానవుడు mānavuḍu. n. A man, మనుష్యుడు. మానవేశ్వరుడు mānavēṣvaruḍu. n. A king. రాజు. M. 1. i. 141.

(p. 1046) mōduga, mōdugu or మోదువు mōduga. [Tel.] n. The tree called Bastard Teak. Butca frondosa. పాలాశము, కింశుకము. తీగెమోదుగు Butea superba. (Watts.) ములుమోదుగు a thorny species. మోదుగు తొడిమెలు mōdugu-toḍimelu. n. The name given to a kind of fine rice, having long grains, ఒకజాతివడ్లు. 'మోదుగ తొడిమెలు ముదుకసరులు.' H. iv. 157. మోదుగుమోడలు mōdugu-māḍalu. n. A kind of rice, ఒకజాతివడ్లు. The seeds of the Bastard Teak tree, మోదుగువిత్తులు.

(p. 997) mucciccu much-chiṭsṭsu. [Tel. మూడు + చిచ్చు.] n. plu. Three fires, త్రేతాగ్ని.

(p. 1001) muḍugu muḍugu. [Tel.] v. n. To be drawn in, as one's limbs, to shrink, shrivel, or close, ముకుళించు. To be diminished, తగ్గు, సంకోచించు. To be unable to act, చేష్టలుడుగు. ముడుగుతామర muḍugutāmara. n. The plant called Hibiscus mutabilis, పొత్తితామర, నమస్కారి. See ముచ్చముడుగు. ముడుచు muḍuṭsu. v. a. To cause to fold, ముడుగుజేయు. To tie into a knot, ముడివేయు, ముడిపెట్టు. To set flowers in the tresses. To bend the limbs. 'చక్ర స్త్రీలు మోముల్ ముడుంప.' (S. iii. 399.) the doves looked downcast. దానికి పూలుముడిచినదెవరు who set the flowers in her hair? ముడుచుకొను muḍuṭsu-konu. v. a. To contract as limbs. To wear flowers in one's hair. అది పూలుముడుచుకొన్నది she wore flowers in her hair. మూతిముడుచుకొని ఉన్నది her features are contracted, pensive or downcast. ముడత or ముడుత muḍata. n. A wrinkle, crumpling, knot in spinning or twisting. వళి, మడత. ముడత తెవులు a transient blight in corn that goes off again. ముడుపు or ముడ్పు muḍupu. n. A rouleau, bag or purse. మల్లె, భూషణాదులమూట, ధనపుమూట, ధనము. పూలముడుపు a ceremony of setting flowers in the head dress of a pregnant woman. వెంకటేస్వరులముడుపు money or jewels promised by a vow to the god Venkaṭesa. ముడుపు కట్టుకొను to vow money or jewels to a god. దివాణెపుముడుపు money payable into the Government treasury. 'అద్దములోనదోచు ముడుపు.' (Ahal. iii. 48.) a purse reflected in the mirror. ముడుపరి muḍup-ari. n. One who vows to offer some money to a god. ముడుపుపుట్టినవాడు.

(p. 1027) mēka mēka. [Tel.] n. A goat. మేకపిల్ల a kid. మేకవన్నెపులి a tiger of the color of a goat. i.e., a wolf in sheep's clothing. వెంటిమేక a she-goat. మేకపోతు a he-goat. పిల్లలుమేకలుగలవారము I am the head of a large family containing many individuals of both sexes. The Indians goat has excrescences like teats on the neck: as these are useless, వాడు వట్టిమేక మెడచన్ను denotes He is a mere useless burden or appendage. మేకతిండి meka-tinḍi. n. That which feeds on goats, i.e., a wolf, తోడేలు, మేకము [borrowed by Skt. from Tel.] n. Same as మేక. మేకమేయనాకు mēka-mēyan-āku. n. A certain poisonous herb. H. iv. 14. (As Shakespeare says, 'The green sour ringlets whereof the ewe not bites.')

(p. 1049) mraṅga or మంగ mranga. [Tel.] n. A kind of tree.

(p. 949) maddi maddi. [Tel.] n. The tree called Mentaptera arjuna. అర్జునము. Rox. ii. 438. Terminalia alata. Kœnig. Ainsl. ii. 193. Ailanthus malabarica. (Watts.) There are various species called ఇనుమద్ది, పూడుమద్ది, ఏరుమద్ది, ఎల్లమద్ది or చిరిమాను and దూదిమద్ది, Bricdelia retusa. మద్దికాయలు maddi-kāyalu. n. The fruit of the tree. A kind of earrings worn by boys.

(p. 977) mārāmu or మారము mārāmu. [Tel.] n. Teasing, plaguing, annoying. గో౛ులాట. A secret, మర్మము. A joint, కీలు. A trick, knavery, తంటా. మారాములమారి a rogue. 'ఓ రామచిలుక మాకీమ రాములు తెలియటకును మగవారమె.' S. ii. 40. మారాముచేయు mārāmu-chēyu. v. a. To tease, to plague. గో౛ులాడు.
