(p. 1115) v va. [Tel.] The consonant V or W. As with h in English, v in Telugu is sometimes added in places where it does not occur, and dropped in places where it does occur by incorrect speakers or writers; e.g., ఒళ్లు is often pronounced and written వళ్లు and ఊరు, వూరు; while words like వెర్రి and వెచ్చము are pronounced and written ఎర్రి and ఎచ్చము. The initial V is also frequently changed into a vowel or a Y by vulgar speakers: e.g., ఏప or యేప for వేప. ఎట్టి or యెట్టి for వెట్టి. The initial P (in verse) is sometimes changed into V; thus వోయె (vōye) for పోయె (pōye) he went; వాపె (vāpe) for పాపె (pāpe) he removed. Sometimes the initial V changes into B, as బలె for వలె 'like.' 'దీపాంకురపఙ్క్తులంబలె.' Bhanumat. iv. 142. This change is caused by the preceding sunna: Sometimes in the second syllable G changes into V; as పగడము, పవడము. In prosody వ stands for వగణము an iambic; more usually written లగము. And in poems వ stands for వచనము prose.

It is also thus used, as equivalent to people folk. నావారు my people. మీవారు your people. ఈ యూరివారు the people of this village. నేను చూచినవారు the people whom I saw. Added to some nouns it has an honorific sense, as దేవరవారు, దొరవారు your honor. Infl. వారి their. వారు v. n. To flow down, or drain off, as water from boiled rice, వడియు, గంజిమొదలైనదికారు. To be lessened or diminished, ఉడుగు. v. a. To pare or cut thin, as the ends of a palm leaf. తాటాకు ఓరచివ్వు. వారుకొను vāru-konu. v. a. To take up by the handful. Metaphorically, to get, gain, possess oneself of. పిడికిళ్లాదిగా ఎత్తుకొను, పొందు; చెందు. నన్ను మోసము చేసి వాడేమి వారుకొన్నాడు has he gained any thing by cheating me? వారుచు or వార్చు vāruṭsu. (causal of వారు) v. a. To touch water with the lips and cast it away. ఆచమించు. To cause to flow, వారజేయు. గంజివార్చు to pour off the water from boiled rice by inclining the vessel, వారు నట్టుచేయు. To expect, ప్రతీక్షించు, ఉద్దేశించు. సంధ్యవార్చు to offer up prayers: (because while uttering the prayer called సంథ్య they let water run through their hungers.) 'హేమకుంభ జలములనొగివార్చి జలకంబుదీర్చి.' DRU. 774. 'సంధ్యవార్చువేళ.' G. vi. 17. వారుపు or వార్పు vārupu. n. The act of straining water or letting it flow, ఆచమనము. Care, regard, respect, esteem. గురి; ఉద్దేశము, గౌరవము. నాయందు వానికి లక్ష్యములేదు. he does not care for me, or mind me. An instance or example adduced in proof. దృష్టాంతము. ఇందుకు లక్ష్యము for instance. అది లక్ష్యము కాదు that is no great matter. లక్ష్యపెట్టు or లక్ష్యముచేయు lakshya-peṭṭu. v. a. To aim. (p. 1108) lēki lēki. [Tel.] n. Grain dropped down on the ground, రాలిన ధాన్యపుగిం౛లు. A worthless wretch, a vagabond. దేవురుగొట్టు, పనికిమాలినవాడు, పనికిమాలినది, అప్రయోజకుడు. 'లేకులలోకులకాకరుపులకు చాకిచాకనియేల సందడించెదవు.' BD. iv. 101. లేకిచేష్టలు silly doings. లేకిబడియ a rascal, a scoundrel. లేకిబ్రతుకు lēki-bratuku. n. A miserable life, a hand to mouth livelihood. లేకివాడు lēki-vāḍu. n. One who lives from hand to mouth. A useless person. అప్రయోజకుడు.

To cause to wither, వాడుజేయు. వాడబారు, వాడుపారు, వాడుదెంచు or వాడువడు vāḍa-bāru. v. n. To fade. మ్లానమగు, కందు. 'సీ లవలీదళములట్ల సవరైన చెక్కులు వాడ బారగముద్దులాడియాడి.'
