(p. 1157) vāru vāru. [Tel. plu. of వాడు. he.] pron. They, వాండ్రు. It is also thus used, as equivalent to people folk. నావారు my people. మీవారు your people. ఈ యూరివారు the people of this village. నేను చూచినవారు the people whom I saw. Added to some nouns it has an honorific sense, as దేవరవారు, దొరవారు your honor. Infl. వారి their. వారు v. n. To flow down, or drain off, as water from boiled rice, వడియు, గంజిమొదలైనదికారు. To be lessened or diminished, ఉడుగు. v. a. To pare or cut thin, as the ends of a palm leaf. తాటాకు ఓరచివ్వు. వారుకొను vāru-konu. v. a. To take up by the handful. Metaphorically, to get, gain, possess oneself of. పిడికిళ్లాదిగా ఎత్తుకొను, పొందు; చెందు. నన్ను మోసము చేసి వాడేమి వారుకొన్నాడు has he gained any thing by cheating me? వారుచు or వార్చు vāruṭsu. (causal of వారు) v. a. To touch water with the lips and cast it away. ఆచమించు. To cause to flow, వారజేయు. గంజివార్చు to pour off the water from boiled rice by inclining the vessel, వారు నట్టుచేయు. To expect, ప్రతీక్షించు, ఉద్దేశించు. సంధ్యవార్చు to offer up prayers: (because while uttering the prayer called సంథ్య they let water run through their hungers.) 'హేమకుంభ జలములనొగివార్చి జలకంబుదీర్చి.' DRU. 774. 'సంధ్యవార్చువేళ.' G. vi. 17. వారుపు or వార్పు vārupu. n. The act of straining water or letting it flow, ఆచమనము. Water poured off from boiling rice, గంజి.

The dung of horses, asses, elephants, or camels. అశ్వాదులపేడ. లద్దిఆకు trash, the remaining substance of leaves boiled for dye, &c. లద్దిపురుగు laddi-purugu. n. A dung-beetle. The fly that destroys corn, a grub in wood. క్రిమివిశేషము. లద్దెపిప్పి or లద్దిపిప్పి ladde-pippi. n. The blight or murrain that destroys corn. ఒకవిధమైన చీడ. లద్దె or లద్దియ laddc. n. The end of a cloth. వేయువాడు బట్టచివరను విడిచెడు అంచు.

Writing in general, hand-writing, a written character. వ్రాత. దేవనాగరలిపి the Devanāgri character. లిపికారుడు, లిపికరుడు or లిపీకరుడు lipi-kāruḍu. n. A scribe, writer or copyist. వ్రాయువాడు. లిప్తము or లిప్తకము liptamu. adj. Smeared, anointed, plastered. పూయబడిన. లిప్తకము liptakamu. n. A poisoned arrow.

(p. 1153) vāmamu vāmamu. [Skt.] adj. Left, not right. సవ్యము, ఎడమ. Charming, lovely. రమ్యమైన. Crooked, వక్రము. Short, పొట్టి, హ్రస్వము. వామ vāma. n. A lovely woman, సుందరమైనస్త్రీ. వామకరము vāma-karamu. The left hand. ఎడమచెయ్యి. వామలోచన vāma-lōchana. n. Lit: the bright eyed, or fine eyed, i.e., a beautiful eyed woman. మంచికన్నులుగలస్త్రీ. వామాన్యకరము the right hand; lit. the hand which is different from the left, కుడిచెయ్యి. KP. vi. 33.

(p. 1094) lampaṭa or లంపటము lampaṭa. [Tel.] n. Pain, trouble, weariness, బాధ, తొందర, ఆయాసము. Danger, ఆపద. 'సూర్యదీప్తివలన శోషిల్లుచున్న పద్మాకరంబులెల్లనతిశయిల్లె. పెక్కులంపటములజిక్కిమమత్వముల్ మానకున్న జనులమనసులట్ల.' Vish. vii. 228. లంపటపడు lampaṭa-paḍa. v. n. To take pains. శ్రమపడు. లంపటుడు lampaṭuḍu. n. One who loves, one who is given up to or eager for, అత్యాసక్తికలవాడు, మిక్కిలి ఆశగలవాడు. స్త్రీలంపటుడు a whoremonger, a libertine, a gallant. 'రాజ్యసుఖలంపటుడై.' URT. iii. 111. 'అటుగాక కర్మగతిలంపటుడనగుదునేని.' M. XII. i. 37.

(p. 1105) lu lu. [Tel.] n. The sing of the plural in Telugu. It is probably a corruption of the Sanskrit word గురు. In the Ujjayani or Middle Indian dialect, as seen, according to Cunningham, in the Girnar, Rupenath and other inscriptions of Asoka, the word గురు (guru) first occurs in the form of గులు (gulu). Cf. గళ్ used in Tamil and గళు in Kanarese. కులలు as a plural ending occurs in a few words in Telugu, as కొలకులు. Vide Seshagiri Sastri's Notes on Telugu Grammar. Originally there was no sign of the plural in the Dravidian tongues. See Caldwell. The use of లు as a plural sign was finally extended to other than Masculine nouns, as తమ్ములు, స్త్రీలు, చెట్లు, &c.
