(p. 1264) ślōkamu ṣlōkamu. [Skt.] n. A verse, a stanza. సంస్కృత పద్యము. Fame, యశస్సు. అర్థశ్లోకము a hemistich. పుణ్యశ్లోకుడు, ఉత్తమ శ్లోకుడు or సుశ్లోకుడు a famous man, one well spoken of.

(p. 1254) śukamu ṣukamu. [Skt.] n. A parrot. చిలుక. శూకనాసము suka-nāsamu. n. A tree, Bignonia indica or Sesbana gṛandiflora, తెల్లఅగిసె, దుండిగము. శుకవాహుడు ṣuka-vāhuḍu. n. Lit. he whose steed is a parrot, an epithet of Manmadha.

(p. 1249) śālmali ṣālmali. [Skt.] n. The silk-cotton tree, which) like the Sallow) is proverbially big and worthless. బూరుగుచెట్టు. A mere braggart. Also, the name of an island. ఒకద్వీపము.

(p. 1240) śaṅkhamu ṣankhamu. [Skt.] n. A conch shell, a conch used as a horn. The number called 100 billions. కంబవు, నూరుఖర్వములు. దక్షిణావర్తశంఖము a conch the windings of which turn to the right. శంఖచక్రములు the conch and the discus, as weapons of Vishnu. శంకచక్రాలపోగులు round earrings worn by Vaishnavites on which is the form of a conch and of a circle. శంఖమందుపోస్తేతీర్థము (a proverb) lit. any water poured in a conch becomes sacred water; that is, all one says is law! I am to take his word for gospel! జీతముముట్టలేదని శంఖధ్వనిచేయుచున్నాడు he is howling for his pay. శంఖనఖము ṣankha-nakhamu. n. A small or base shell. క్షుద్రశంఖము, నత్తగుల్ల. A perfume, ఒకవిధమైన పరిమళ ద్రవ్యము. శంఖపాణి ṣankha-pāṇi. n. Lit. the conch bearer, i.e., Vishnu. శంఖపాలకులు ṣankha-pālakulu. n. plu. A kind of snake. సర్పవిశేషములు. 'బొట్టపెంబరలును, శంఖపాలకులునుజాతినాగులు.' G. viii. 101. శంఖిని ṣankhini. n. A woman of a certain type. An apparition, a fairy. స్త్రీజాతిభేదము, స్త్రీభూతభేదము.

(p. 1261) śrama or శ్రమము ṣrama. [Skt.] n. Labour, toil, trouble, distress, hardship, difficulty, fatigue, weariness, అలసట, ప్రయాసము. కష్టము, తొందర. Practice, అలవాటు. 'శ్రమమునకై యేమసకలాంబకంబు లెక్కుడు వెసనేయ.' భార. కర్ణ. ii. Excercise, దేహదార్ఢ్యమునకైచేయు సాము. శ్రమపడు ṣrama-paḍu. v. n. To be troubled, distressed, annoyed; to take pains. శ్రమపెట్టు ṣrama-peṭṭu. v. a. To trouble, pain, plague, torture, annoy. తొందరపెట్టు, బాధించు. శ్రముడు ṣramuḍu. n. He who is tired or fatigued. అలసినవాడు. Anir. iii. 49.

(p. 1261) śrāddhamu ṣrāddhamu. [Skt. from శ్రద్ధ.] n. Funeral ceremonies or obsequies, observed at various fixed periods, consisting of offerings with water and fire, to the gods and manes, and gifts and food to the relations present, and assistant Brahmins. పితృకర్మము, పిత్రర్థముగా దేశకాలవిధికృత బ్రాహ్మణ భోజనము. ఏకోద్దిష్ట శ్రాద్ధము a funeral ceremony observed eleven days after a persons's death. నిత్యశ్రాద్ధము daily funeral ceremonies for a year after a person's death. ధర్మశ్రాద్ధము the funeral ceremony observed every new moon. మహాలయశ్రాద్ధము a funeral ceremony in the sixth lunar month. సపిండశ్రాద్ధము or సపిండీకరణము a funeral ceremony in which the balls of rice offered to the deceased individually and collectively, are blended together. తిర్థశ్రాద్ధము a funeral ceremony celebrated in a holy place. నాందీశ్రాద్ధము an offering made to the manes of deceased ancestors on solemn occasions. హిరణ్యశ్రాద్ధము money distributed in charity as an offering to the manes. ఆమశ్రాద్ధము uncooked ingredients distributed as above said. అన్నశ్రాద్ధము cooked food served out to guests as aforesaid. ఘటశ్రాద్ధము obsequies performed to a waterjar, which bears the name of a man's living wife, whom he divorces by breaking the jar. వానికి కొంచెము హిరణ్య శ్రాద్ధముచేస్తేనే గాని ఆ పని అనుకూలపడేటట్టు ఉండలేదు unless you grease his palm, I think that business will not be settled in our favour. శ్రాద్ధదేవుడు ṣrāddha-dēvuḍu. n. Yama, the god of death. యముడు.

Hell. నరకము. A. ii. 4. శమనస్వస ṣamana-svasa n. A name of the river Jumna. యమునానది. శమనుడు āmanuḍu. n. A name of Yama, యముడు. శమి ṣami. adj. Peaceful, శమముగల. n. A tree called Prosopis spicigera, ౛మ్మిచెట్టు. The husk of peas, &c. కందులు మొదలైనవాటిపొట్టు శమించు or శమియించు ṣam-inṭsu. v. n. To be at rest, to be or become quiet still, or tranquil, శాంతిబొందు, అడగు. శమితము ṣam-itamu. adj. Pacified, appeased. still, calm. శాంతిబొందిన, శమించిన.
